The other thing we have to realise is that spending big on players of proven quality don't put us on par with Chelsea and City. What they consistently do is show a willingness to also pay huge amounts for players who are gambles and then, when they flop, Chelsea/Man City are quite content never to play them.
While the signing of Welbeck should rightly be derided because he was a panic buy, the fact that he was 16m shouldn't even factor into the argument. Gambling 20m on squad players who hardly find themselves in the first team squad is as much a trait of the cash rich clubs in Europe as spending big money on Costa, Bale, Di Maria Suarez etc.
For instance, I wasn't worried when United signed Di Maria. What scares me is that they can sign Di Maria, drop him on to the bench and still be willing to spend the same amount again. And again. Till they get it right.
