First of all Monaco didn't smash anyone. We should have comfortably won both games and had Giroud not missed so many sitter we most certainly would have cruised through. regardless we lost on away goals. If you call that being smashed then ok. That's a side point though and has nothing to do with my point.
Swiftly moving on, there's a difference between not being good enough to beat the best and being a laughed at for buying a player. As if somehow buying the guy will make us a weaker outfit than if we didn't buy him. Buying someone else who is better is not guaranteed and to be honest even this is very unlikely but I fail to see how the signing of Schneiderlin will turn us into a laughing stock.
