Wenger knows what needs to be done this summer as well as anyone. Whether he actually has the guts to do it remains to be seen, but it's at least encouraging to know that we're not going after 6/10 players anymore. No more Ospinas, Szczesnys or Schneiderlins.

We went after a bang average Welbeck last summer, and true to form he still managed to disappoint. It was clearly the wrong move in retrospect and you'd think Wenger learned something from it. Instead of overpaying for a squad player we should have used the cash to sign someone outstanding long before deadline day.

Such is the potential danger in relying upon late opportunities to fall in your lap, that sometimes you have no room to move if the shit hits the fan.
AW held off buying CF cover / replacement and then got caught short and had to take what he could get at short notice.

Just who better are you expecting? Matic, Busquets or Javi Martinez?

We'll regret this big time.

At the moment there aren't any more suitable midfielders available so we're basically gambling next season on not only a top level player coming on the market but also being able to beat every big team to him.

There's only two ways I can see this window going if we miss out on Schneiderlin. Either we sign no one and go into next season with Flamini and Arteta as our DM backups, or we sign an inferior player to Schneiderlin.

I don't think Schneiderlin is better than Coquelin based on the form the latter showed last season. Schneiderlin has played in a highly defensive setup and won't get the same support here.

However, we really need competition for Coquelin. We can't go into the season with Arteta and Flamini. That has disaster written all over it. Schneiderlin will be a fantastic buy. He will give us numerous tactical options and an alternative. Players can't play at the same level for 60 matches. It's great for a manager to have a selection headache with options like Coquelin and Schneiderlin. They will push each other with the competition too.

I really hope we are in for Schneiderlin. He ticks all the boxes. He qualifies as homegrown, he is entering his prime, he is attuned with the physicality of the League. I agree we need a defensive midfield player a level above Coquelin but I don't know who that is.

Exactly how i feel and been feeling about him the whole time. Although there will be lots of sandy vaginas around when he ends up at ManU and our gamble on someone better will not come off.

Basically if a player can come in a la Cech and instantly be an upgrade for our starting 11, he wouldnt mind binning someone, but he's not gonna spend clubs money on a sidegrade. I know many have developed this weird obsession with Morgs, but he IS a sidegrade.

He is not starting ahead of Coq, he is not starting ahead of Santi/Ramsey on two of our deepest midfield positions. We're aiming higher. It remains to be seen if it comes off, but the fact that we have passed on multiple midfielders on a similar level within a week, only shows, that we're not after someone on their level as we already have plenty of options in this bracket.

It's well and good to desire for world class additions only but not at the cost of squad depth, is it?

We need competition for Coquelin. Schneiderlin is a very good option if we can't find a world class player.

How quickly does Schneiderlin release the ball forwards?

Key for me is how quickly we look to transition the ball forward = the reverse of the Fabregas tempo impact on The Invincibles play.
Arteta, Rambo & Wilshere all take the extra touch or look to initially promote/transition with ball at feet. Only Cazorla plays the ball forward quickly enough.

£24m is a big investment, though. You don't spend that on a Flamini replacement or marginal Coquelin upgrade. He's not better than a fit Arteta. If you don't agree with me that's fine, but if Wenger felt otherwise he'd be in an Arsenal shirt by now. It's agonizing but you don't want to tie your money up in players who aren't good enough. It's a long summer - players can become available, players outside the PL and CL teams can show themselves to be great prospects (how well have people looked in La Liga? Are we sure there isn't a player there?). And if the worst happens we can get by with Arteta/Coquelin/Flamini as long as we add enough quality in other positions.

Vidal is not a holding player.

I've gone back and forth on Schneiderlin because I think it's harsh to call him a 6/10 player. He's just not the right type for us and is not a top player, so I would understand if Wenger passed as long as he signed a defender instead or something.

It's not a coincidence that our great run last season coincided with Coquelin's emergence. It's such a key area on the pitch. Arteta may be a better player in theory and I love him but there is no guarantee he can overcome the physical regression that comes with age. We need a fitter, stronger, faster, more mobile player there along with the having adequate technique. I fear we may lament not signing a competent option for that position at the end of the season if Coquelin doesn't survive the rigours of a full season.

The worth of Sterling who's had 2 good seasons at top level and kane who's had one full good season are questioned.

Yet Coquelin's apparently just worse than the best on the basis of 6 months.

Kane's already scored more in the league than Giroud also ever did. But Giroud's just worse than Neymar and Aguero because Higuain and Cavani are not better than him lol.

What world class player are you expecting anyway at DM those who keep on harping about Schneiderlin not being good enough?

The same people talking about these mythical world class players will be the ones complaining about the lack of alternatives once Coquelin gets injured or loses form. Same with Giroud.

Exactly. This isn't football manager. What players are these people expecting? Busquets, Martinez etc. ? Is Gabriel a proven world class player too. Nope but he's an exotic Brazilian who played in Spain.

Ospina's had 3-4 good months too. Maybe Cech is a side-step too Let's wait and see if we can Courtouis or De Gea in 3-4 years and if we can't let's sign no-one. Wenger only wants world class players.

Welbeck was last summer and Welbeck is a squad option, not a starter. £16m for a squad option is fine. If we paid _£15m for Morgs as a squaddie - i would be content with it. The fact that he is looking to upgrade on starting 11 is an encouraging sign, not negative.

Gotta say, I rate Schneiderlin quite highly. He's fully established in this league, home grown, has captained Southampton a few times, likely to form a strong working relationship with Wenger and generally a very good player.

I also think there aren't too many players available in this market who are better than Schneiderlin. Maybe he's not better than Coquelin but he's sure as hell better than Flamini and he's about to enter his prime unlike Arteta who is on his way out.

And £24m is honestly not that bad a deal, Lallana, Lovren and Shaw all moved for around that price and fit a similar profile. Think about it this way, if you were Southampton, would you sell him for anything less?

That contradicts your 'world class' signings only line though. And Wenger has been using that line for years, remember the whole 'super super class' thing?
