for me, we have 3 distinct positions in our midfield now.

and the pecking order appears to be

dm: coq > ?
cm: cazorla > ramsey
am: ozil > wilshere?

everyone wants ramsey to play cm instead of cazorla. except wenger. if he wont play ramsey there, he wont play wilshere there ahead of ramsey.

coq is the first name on the team sheet, so given that, i can see why we might not want to spend 25m on schneiderlin, since he wouldnt really be first choice. we could do with a DM, somoene like coq, to provide rotation options. flamini and arteta arent good enough for that role in our current setup. but you can probably find a great alternative to coq for 10m or less this summer. no need to spend 25m on schneiderlin. though id gladly take him, obviously. we just dont have unlimited funds, so if that money is needed elsewhere, im fine spending less on a specialist DM

I like the idea of someone who would be an upgrade on Cazorla, who could also play instead of coq when need be. Koke is the only name that comes to mind.

Ramsey is an upgrade on Cazorla by a fair bit. I sincerely hope Wenger isn't looking at Coquelin thinking 'we only need cover for him'. We need a player at least as good as him for proper competition IMO, and Schneiderlin is IMO a step up compared to Coquelin. Would be an excellent signing for us.

I don't think we do. I'd rather have a player like Schneiderlin who is very good on the ball, though not Arteta or Cazorla good, but who is defensively a LOT better than either of them. He is also a player who adds height and aerial prowess to our team of midgets.

Arteta is easily better than Schneiderlin defensively.

Schneiderlin is a step up from Coquelin in that he has been consistently good for 3 seasons for one thing. Actually, I don't care; just get the boy in and let him and Coquelin slug it out for that spot. Then play them together in certain games.

It's not even close. Schneiderlin is more of a box to box player. He doesn't have half the positional understanding Arteta does.

Arteta at his best is a better player in most respects than Schneiderlin ever will be imo. But I've no idea how far from his best Arteta is any more.

Schneiderlin has played a more advanced role this season, im pretty sure if you looked at his 13/14 stats you would find them much more DM worthy.
Personally would love him here as I think he can play both midfield roles really well & has a good range of passing.
He has been improving every year & think Wenger & playing with top quality can take him to that next level

I much say, I'm surprised Schneiderin's passing ability is so highly rated by some on here, I've never found that aspect of his game particularly impressive.

cause it's not. it's a basic 'get it, give it' level of passing, which he does well enough. certainly not as good as arteta's.

He takes ages on the ball, people complaing about Arteta's "slow" passing would fall asleep when this guy is in possession, if we're stupid enough to pay a penny for him.

Coq is better already too.

Saw him for France against Brazil, and he was absolutely shit. Such a nothing player, it makes me wonder what the fuss is about. Toni fucking Kroos went for the same fee this guy reportedly costs, how insane is that?

It's no point in comparing with Kroos who had one year left on his contract. Although we can probably find someone as good or better than Schneiderlin for half the price in some other league. I just hope we sign a DM.

does camacho from malaga have a reasonable buyout in his contract? hes a player ive always liked that could work in the holding role

I'm sure he wouldn't cost much, but I don't think he's top quality. It really is tough to think of a DM - all the great Spanish ones (Arteta included) are getting old.

I personally don't think Wenger trusts Coquelin, otherwise he wouldn't play Cazorla centrally with Ramsey wide. I think we're targeting the position, but perhaps that's just optimism creeping in.
