I have been impressed though at what I've seen from Martinez but as you say- Give him some time in a team that treats defending like some disgusting but necessary chore like changing a baby's nappy, and his confidence will be shot to bits.
For the time being there is no real alternative to Szczesny.

Got no major issues with him. Yes he's rash but any keeper will end up being so with Mertesacker ahead of him.

Much bigger issues in the squad for me.

These are all squad players, so they only get the chance to bottle it for us when they get the chance to play. Szczesny plays every week. My top 3 is Mertesacker, Szczesny, Flamini.

You have to look at what roles they have. For example, Coq is good enough as a third DM, but Szczesny isn't good enough to be our first choice Gk.

Monreal plays a fair bit and he is crap. Debuchy is class, is he? Giroud? Chambers has been a starter most of the season.

Whatever floats your boat, mate. I don't think Sneezey is a problem at all, despite a poor game, because most of the time I think he is very good. If Joe Hart can win two PL medals, and he is crap, then Sneezey is easily good enough for a PL winning side. In short - I don't mind him being our first choice for the next decade. That is at the level he is at now, but I expect him to improve of course; he is only a baby in goalkeepers' years.

Quickest way to improve this team is at both extremes. Bring in a world class keeper and a world class striker and we're looking at a 10+ point minimum gain per league season. People either get this or they don't get football; no biggie.

As for Szczesny, we wouldn't be worse off if we swapped him straight off with half of the teams in the league. It's not that he's bad. It's just that he's not very good either. The things he does well are common goods among keepers - look at Forster, who has outperformed him both times we've faced Southampton this season. After nearly 200 games at top level you've either outgrown the phase where you make these sort of mistakes regularly or you never will. Szczesny simply doesn't have the talent to become a class keeper.

Well, you are talking about Neuer, Courtois and Cech here. Of course anyone would take either of them if one were to fall in our lap at a pittance! However, IMO we need top class players at CF, CM, CB, and probably left wing too, waaaaaaay more than we need a goalkeeper in that bracket. We are not Man City or PSG pre-FFP; there are limits to our budget, which means we have to prioritize. Spunking our moolah on a goalie of that caliber seems money poorly spent, in my opinion, when looking at our needs.

Yeah, we need a new world class keeper and striker, it would inject into the team instantly.

I'm not talking about Neuer, Courtois or Cech. I'm simply talking about signing an outstanding keeper instead of one who constantly fucks up. It's expensive but it's not as expensive as fixing the other 8 positions we're lacking at. That's why it's called a priority fix, just like getting that world class striker is. It's where the points are being earned. Marv's suggestion that a new keeper is a top three priority sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Get a striker, a centreback and a new keeper and we've got something resembling a team again.

No, we don't, because that would still leave us with a midfield where Arteta is hardly playing and Flamini/Coquelin plays a lot.

I also don't think that Sneezey 'constantly fucks up'.

Completely agree with your posts about Szczesny. But then the problem comes, he is amongst all of those that is good, but not great. Where do we find the great keeper that will be a massive upgrade on him?

And the most crucial point to the entire debate is that, unless Szczesny make another few GLARING errors, Wenger won't think it is a problem. He trust his players too much. It's not like we have Almunia-like keeper in goal that is so obvious to replace.
