Francis Coquelin, one off or genuine midfield option for us this season?

Only reason this is being mentioned is because Flamini has been a filler literally. He offers really next to nothing. His ability to run endlessly has gone with age and injuries and that enabled him to be a menace when he was younger. Now he's slow and he was never the best tackler or passer. Wenger's really lowered the standard so much that a half decent performance is considered noteworthy.

Read somewhere that Coquelin had 5 tackles and 4 interceptions against West Ham. That is VERY impressive IMO. As far as his passing being below par in the game, I generally agree; however, it is wise to look at the context of the game here IMO. The whole team had a poor performance when it comes to passing, and Coquelin was 4th, I think, in pass completion. He also hit over 40 percent of his passes forward, which I generally am in favor of.

He is no world beater, by any means, but I'd play him over Flamini any day of the week as soon as Ramsey or Arteta is back.

His screening work is very good. Reads the game well enough to intercept too. Needs to focus on his control now so that all that hard work winning the ball doesn't go to waste. Unlike Flams he's got the time to improve.

Whenever I saw him playing for us he left a decent impression. I wouldn't worry too much about his passing, I think it will improve if he gets to play more regularly.

Most of my worries/doubts come from the fact that he didn't establish himself in any of the lesser clubs he was loaned to (maybe Lorient spell was OK). But I have no idea why, I didn't watch his games on loan. Maybe he's simply too small for DM position? Or perhaps "being somewhat decent" is the most he can achieve?

Ever sonce i first saw him play that preseason he first signed i was certain he was going to be a star, hes got the capability he just needs the confidence, think in the meantime give him some games over flam

He's shit compared to most midfielders in the top leagues in europe, but he's better than Flamini.

His tackling in the West Ham game was brilliant but its the sort of tackling that can get you into trouble. He throws himself about a lot and I generally like that but one slightly off challenge and he gets a least a yellow. Then what? You can't play like that on a yellow.

As for Flamini well I'm not really impressed with him this season but he's had a couple of solid performances in a row now and I've zero doubts he would be a key player for Charlton.

Too much is made of this Charlton spell I reckon. He was there for a month and played in 5 games, started 3 and as a sub in 2. I imagine those 5 games were all their games in that period, and by the looks of it Coquelin had 2 sub appearances to convince the manager that he should start, and then started 3 games. They also wanted to extend his loan, so he must have done SOMETHING right when there.

Didn't know what to make of him during his first spell at Arsenal and i still don't know now. Looks a good footballer, but tends to disappear from matches when he plays in midfield and is too slow to play fullback.

I'm not sure where the negative references to his loan at Charlton are coming from as according to my mate who supports Charlton, he was one of their best players and he was actually really annoyed that we recalled him. Obviously, Charlton are at a lower level than Arsenal, but he no doubt done well for them.

I would happily play him over Flamini however I wouldn't be suprised if he ends up at another Premiership club.

I'd rather have Flamini at his level in a Championship side, and Coquelin as third choice in the squad behind BEAST CM and Arteta. 🙂

He nearly fucked us over today with that tackle in the 9th minute. The hell was he thinking?

That said he had a pretty good game. It's just nice to see a midfielder who knows how to position himself. I give it two more weeks tops before he loses that ability like everyone else at this club does.

Few hairy challenges and a little careless with the passing, but my god is it good to have a defensive mid who actually defends. Despite a few loose passes he's actually better on the ball than I thought and so is his positioning. Said ages ago he can't be worse than Flamini and he isn't. God knows why Wenger hasn't used him until now.

I was thinking that, and the same for Campbell, and even more so for Rosicky: it was somehow assumed they all sucked (early glimpses of Campbell did suggest that),
but with our bare bone situation in the middle, and with Rosicky seemingly playing every bit as good as he was in the previous 2 years - WTF?
