'Total Football' (like 'common sense'), is a failure when it is not given a structure or framework, even when based upon 'player intelligence',
particularly when those players are unsure of what their position requires of them in the team shape/patterns/roles.
Accordingly they all start playing variations of the same theme regardless of position, or numbers of players playing the same theme.
