I just think PSG got lured in by the hype. Luiz was already an expensive signing for Chelsea, had arguably increased in value since then, and defenders are really hard to come by. So they went all in for him and they fucked up. We've seen Bayern do the same thing with Martinez.

The fact of the matter is that a player who was wanted by Barca, Bayern and PSG went for a large sum of money. You can rate Luiz however you like but there was nothing the least bit fishy about the deal.

I'm leaning towards that too. Look around - Jeremy Mathieu went for 20 million. We got something similar for Vermaelen. What did Mangala cost City? I'm sure it was over 30 million. Luiz's fee is in line with those evaluations. People are paying through their teeth for defenders.

Mangala was 42m. Same as Ozil.

The only one who went for a somewhat reasonable fee in todays market was Benatia and they only signed him because Martinez got injured.

It's someone who we could have signed. I remember people not being too concerned because of how good Per and Kos were last season.

42m for a non-superstar is an absolute joke and Citeh deserve to have it blow up in their faces.

I doubt the conspiracy theories too when it comes to these transfers. Abrahimovic's arrival in England altered transfer prices completely in the noughties. PSG and City have only added to the shift. It isn't surprising that Mangala and Luiz were bought by those two clubs, outrageous as those prices may seem.

UEFA need to make an example out of City and dismiss their touted sponsorship deal, even if it is on paper. FFP is proving to have had some success. Unfortunately FFP only isn't the solution as clubs like United, Real and Barca will eventually dominate the market anyways.

Mangala might be more than 42m. They never disclosed how much they paid to the 3rd parties.

I am one who thinks the Chelsea sales are fishy. It's very weird to get so many high fees for players who ain't even performing/playing for them. There must be some sort of secret agreements behind it.

Agree with this. People doubt Suarez when he was at Liverpool, now after a slow start at Barca he's back to his level, world class. Our attack would have been amazing if we got him. Forget about the double, we would have had a great chance in Europe as well.

Didn't Quaresma tear us apart in 2008? He's always amazing in Porto, and only at Porto. Failed everywhere else.

Possibly. When caps are introduced a la FFP (for example salary caps in other sports) clubs inevitably do attempt to rort them, so to assume there's no conspiracy going on seems foolhardy.

We simply don't know whether PSG has received any additional consideration for paying so much for Luiz—it's possible it's yet to come, or perhaps it was built into a deal we don't know about between PSG's owners and Abramovich.

Clearly Luiz was worth some money, but £50m and the 10th highest fee of all time seems unusual enough for a defender to raise a few questions.

Chelsea probably argued that Matic cost them 20m so in effect, the cost they incurred for Luiz was £42m odd, which is about what PSG paid.

It's no more 'suspicious' than Chelsea getting 28m for Lukaku, or us getting 15m for Vermaelen, Carrol for 35m (though I still remember Asa claiming that was a good deal :lol🙂 or even City paying 30m for Bony, Di Maria for 70m etc. Clubs will pay idiotic fees when they buy into the hype.

And ultimately, you can't even speculate on why PSG would help Chelsea out and put themselves in more trouble, I can't see what they or their owners would have to gain.

Good comparison because the official story sounds as ridiculous as the conspiracy theories. Chelsea have very capable negotiators looking at the other players they have sold in recent years but 50m isn't even remotely close to his value. In the end it was probably down to PSG wanting the first choice CB pairing for Brazil and more generally for prestige reasons, ie buying a player that was a starter for Chelsea.

Luiz' problem is that he has a very high ceiling but very low floor. Little makes sense with him, he has brilliant moments (in defence too) as well as 7-1s in him. Also I can't believe nobody's ever told him to go to a fucking barber.

Inflate costs and write off VAT. I dunno how it works, we've got about 30 accountants here, you guys figure it out. It's Chelsea. Given a choice between doing something above board and evilly wrangling out an extra few million they'll do the latter and kick some homeless orphans in the process.

Chelsea is a vile club but in buying Luiz, PSG made it impossible for themselves to buy Di Maria because of FFP. Which is why I don't quite believe in some evil nexus. Let's see if there is some dealing with a player going the other way this season. Chelsea will themselves soon need a top defender.

Absolutely, but they tend to do it through sponsorship deals and other type of commercial exercises where it's more difficult to regulate. Uefa were going down hard on that PSG shirt deal with Qatar, for instance: http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/27243933
