I'm not sure it's a huge tactical error really. City's defensive players bar Zabaleta are pretty garbage. Kompany, Clichy, and Fernando are particularly out of their depth at this level. That gets exposed against teams like Barca. Both goals were shocking defending, and Fernando didn't play a pass between the lines for the entire first half.
