The vision is to merge the two Leagues in the future. The hitherto run top division is governed by the Football Association which like most Indian institutions are headed by corrupt politicians and bureaucrats. The sport had barely seen any investment despite it being the most popular sport in a number of states. It has not seen much interest from brands and clubs have being bleeding. Players come from Africa to make a living but clubs have no money to attract big names.
The ISL will be a corporatized League with far more commercial potential. The League is jointly owned by India's biggest corporate (Reliance), IMG and India's biggest broadcaster (Murdoch owned Star). The broadcaster having a stake in the League means they will leave no stone unturned to market it. The teams have been purchased through an auction and are owned by big corporates who have made movie stars/ cricketers the face of their teams. Players have been drafted and each team has been allocated one marquee player within the salary cap.
The League's rules mandate each buying owner/ consortium to spend a particular amount on marketing and setting up academies. It won't turn a corner immediately but hopefully gradually improve infrastructure and thus harness the building interest in the sport.
Atletico Madrid and Feyenoord have already partnered with two teams. The English FA have partnered the ISL to help the League establish governance and shape the brand.
Pires, Ljungberg are already confirmed. A deal with Henry couldn't be agreed because of his demands. Looking forward to it finally kicking off after multiple delays.
