yeah, Khanuppet, it appears big but as long as he is under contract, they can get a fee for Shaw for the next 10 years. if he's Gareth Bale good, then it will look like a very good deal in time

That's my point though, the kid can choose to run down his contract or not resign for them etc. Arsenal fans should know more than most that this happens all the time. Sure, its possible he retires at united or is sold for twice as much a couple years down the line but it is by no means certain. Most united fans take it as a given when explaining his high fee.

The fact is English players tend to stick around more than other players and that is a fact. His high fee is down to the fact that he is English and also that he is a potentially world class player in a position where you don't have too many of those right now. Who else has such high potential? Rodriguez looks like he might turn out decent and Alaba but why would he leave and he's big on Arsenal apparently.

He's not going to be a midfielder for us other than on the odd occasion

Centreback most likely long term

I think long term he will be a right back but Wenger will definitely be looking at using as a CB as well the way he did with Sagna in the last year or two. You're dead right about midfield though, he'll get some games there but it wont be his main position.

Not a big risk, really. To do a switch within England, Shaw would have to allow his contract to run down. Imagine being injured in the last few months of a contract that you're running down. Someone like Sagna was able to do it because he knew he had a 50% hike in wages awaiting him and we were definitely not going to match that

Increasingly it's becoming a popular and common trend to see players in other positions without any evidence whatsoever to back-it up with but I only see him as a right-back until he plays consistently in another position.

Yeah, agree with that. It's logical though to see a young tall fullback as "centre half material" at a proper football club so perhaps he can make that transition in time.

It's a bit less dubious than going the other way and treating central defenders and midfielders as cover at fullback if they never play there otherwise.

A more varied vid to show what he's all about

http://vimeo.com/m/101836811

As you can see he's very good in the air and he reads defensive situations well. He also offers a fair bit going forward albeit he's no dani alves on that front.

At 19 he's only going to get stronger and wenger will no doubt aid his development. Top addition to the squad

David Ornstein @bbcsport_david
Chambers expected to be announced on Mon, will join Austria camp. Ospina fee about £3m & #AFC still in market for DMF + DF if Vermaelen goes

Good vid. Looks strong in the air, comfortable with the ball at his feet, good passer, decent pace, and seems to be a decent enough tackler.

His position is why his fee is so nuts. Since when do fullbacks go for so much money? Especially, based on potential rather than achievements. Alaba and Rodríguez are both better than Shaw right now. What happens if United stink it up for a couple more years? (doubtful I know) You think Shaw's just going to stay at United?

Man U will not stink it up for a couple of more years though. They will most likely not win as much as they have during the last 20 years due to the added competition, but they will be up there. When you have the resources that Man U has it is pretty much impossible for them to NOT be up there.

Also, £10m initially which can go up to £16m is hardly nuts.

Even a year left would get the job done I would think.

I'm referring to Shaw. Chambers fee is slightly high but fine.

I'd have been happy had we done the Shaw deal...

You would've been okay with spending a Sánchez level fee on Shaw?

Rex wrote:

Yup...

The transfer fee is fine but the wages would be crazy for us. He's on Ramsey/Ozil level wages. It's fine for Man U because they can absorb it but it wouldn't be a good deal for us.
