We haven't had world cup winners in the team since 98.

We had Cesc in 2010/11.

On that subject, Cesc only made 19 appearances in the League that season, missed even the League Cup Final.

I hope Ozil, Per, Podolski and any other German players we sign are managed well.

Oh and we made probably one of our most important signings after the 2002 World Cup - Gilberto Silva.

Not the most exciting signing then but what a player.

Why is that? Messi is every bit as good as Maradona, if not better. Winning the World Cup shouldn't be a factor. How many CL's has Maradona won? Messi has 3 and scored in 2 of the finals. It's easy to find something to pick on for every player. Messi has scored a zillion goals over the last few years, more then Maradona could ever dream of. Also, it's clear that the guy wasn't fit. Pretty sure he would have punished Germany had he been at his best, he got into a lot of promising positions. I hate this logic that scoring a few goals at the right time makes you the 'greatest'.

I don't quite understand it too but that's how people write history and it passes on unfortunately. I didn't watch Maradona or Pele so I can't compare them. I just feel happy and fortunate that I have been able to watch a player like Messi play. He has been a treat for any football fan in my opinion.

His career when it's over will be celebrated but I think without a World Cup win he won't be spoken in the same breadth as Pele or Maradona, I am afraid.

The fact that people are ready to pronounce him the best ever if he had just won the world cup shows that they already believe he's the best ever.

I think the best ever game is futile as it's so forward focused. A true best ever might be an all action mid who could defend and attack, played multiple positions and scored loads of goals. That description ignores goalkeeping, a critical part of the game. As you can see, a tough and somewhat trivial exercise.

It's clear that Messi is one of the best forwards of all time and the best of his generation. Even if he had not won a single trophy.

I was happy that the game was won with a goal of real class and quality.
Germany deserved the cup.

Shame that none of the Argentinian strike force showed up or did themselves justice.

Mertesacker should be replaced soon, so that we can press teams higher up the pitch and maintain high line.

Ozil likes to be a side man, so perhaps he's better suited to the left position? Vacating the central position for someone with a more talismanic nature. Both Real Madrid and Germany seem to have benefited from this.

We have now had 6 World Cup Winners, as in 6 who were Arsenal players at the time of winning - Vieira, Petit, Fabregas, Ozil, Mertesacker, Podolski. This overtakes West Ham and United who have 3 to make us the leading English club. Juventus have the most with 22, followed by Bayern with 21 and Inter with 18.

And doesn't count players like Henry, Pires, Gilberto and Alan Ball who joined after winning the World Cup. Have we had any other past World Cup winners?

Yep, the Daily Mail article I got the info from doesn't list him. Only lists 14 (of 22) of the 1966 squad so I guess they are only counting those who played but the 8 who didn't play would still count as winners wouldn't they?

Yeah he was in the 2008 and 2012 Euros squads but was injured in 2010.
