It is meaningless. He's not superhuman because someone paid a lot of money for his contract, he's another player like all the others. Now we have him, we should be judging him on how he performs, not on how he lives up to our arbitrary expectations based on a numerical value. What does 43m buy you? 89 goals? 55 assists? That's an absolutely ridiculous way of judging a player.

Besides all of that, he's clearly our best player and our most important player. He's been magic on the pitch for us, has put in tremendous effort, and helped us with our first trophy in almost a decade. He's been a success.

I think it is fair to judge whether a signing is a success or failure, a bargain or rip off with his performance relative to the amount paid.

However, judge him after the whole period.

Arteta suffered an ankle injury during Tuesday's 0-0 draw at Besiktas and had a scan on Wednesday. Wenger was awaiting the results when he attended his pre-match press conference.

"[If he is out for a while] we will be a bit short of course," he said. "If it's a long-term injury, that puts us in a position where we have to be creative."

Oh really, that "someone" was Wenger and he should also be judged as every player by the output, and yes as a forward that means goals and assists because that 43m could have been put to use on another player(s) in another part of the team who will provide better output.

@ Clrnc yes yes yes I know you're hanging out to be able to push humble pie in my face and see me wrong for the first time, but if you ever bothered to read what I have posted you'll see that I'm on the record as saying its in none of our interests for Ozil to fail, Wenger won't be sacked so theres not too much for me to be excited about that.

To be fair, if you have seen his press conference, he gave the Ozil smirk when asked about a defensive midfielder. He certainly is in for one, no doubts.

Amount paid is relative, not fixed. There is no fixed value for money in sport, or in anything, it's about what you want/need, and how much you'll pay for it. After that, it's irrelevant. You've got it, the money is gone, and it's about making it work, not constantly measuring it against 43 like it's a yardstick.

The very fact that some people are questioning Ozil means he hasn't deliver unequivocally so far.

No one doubts Ramsey's quality now, yet people did previously (rightly so based on performances). Ozil has to put any doubt of his worth to bed. Obviously he doesn't really as he get paid £170k a week and doesn't need to give a shit about anything, but when he starts defining the outcome of games there will be no argument for people to doubt his importance.

Don't know why Wenger needs to be creative to cover for Arteta. do hte right thing and acquire the player you believe will take over the role from the ageing pro and get it done. Why are we still trying to shoehorn a squad yet again? The results from alst year should have taught Arsene really. Though to be honest, the results from his squad builds over the past decade should tell him what needs addressing.

The 43m is just a figure it could be 143m that's not important, it's what other player we could have bought for the money and what they could have delivered that is.
And I'm not saying that 43m should guarantee anything I'm not saying that Ozil will not eventually give value for money (I've already said I hope he does), I'm saying that he was bought as an opportunistic signing to save Wengers skin rather than what we really needed most urgently, a replacement for Vieira and Henry.
