He may well be, but he doesn't provide us enough in this system.
Podolski doesn't have the stamina required, nor is he aggressive enough in his movement off the ball.
podolski is in no way a midfielder. he'd be best in a 2 striker system, where he wouldn't have to track the opposing fullback.
he's got the best strong foot in the team. accurate, powerful shots and crosses.
Regardless of who's starting we could use another winger with a bit of swag. Griezmanm, Cuadrado, someone else - it's all good. Just get someone in.

World cup changes nothing. He has a fixed release clause of 30m euros. Either pay up the full amount or get a 5-10m discount from that and give Vela rights to them.
Nobody's going to pay the 30m clause though, he has 12 months left on his contract.

If it was to happen would it have happened by now? I don't know really, so far none of the major deals have been signed off. (Costa to Chelsea seems to be almost done but it's not official so who knows? Latest rumours say he wants to stay at Atletico 🙂 That'd be amusing.) With players tied up in national team duty at the WC it's unlikely that anything will be finalised until they are out of the competition?
I doubt Sociedad have much interest in selling him before the World Cup. His price could jump a significant amount if he makes an impact there.
So you guys seem to be warming up to Tony Greaser. I think another body is necessary because it seems Theo and now Chambo are having knee issues (our wings are falling apart it seems) but I'd still prefer a (well rested!) Vela. Let's see how Tony does during the cup...
