It's not at all hard to believe we're in for Benzema pending some other change at Madrid.

However it's hard to believe that we don't have competition if that's the case.

Loving this. He doesn't leave much room for ifs and buts, at least. No ”it could still happen on the last day of the transfer deadline” bullshit. Sunday is only 4 days away. (Edit: turns out it's Wednesday today, who knew!) We'll find out soon enough if there's any truth to it.

Central defense is probably the single part of the team I am the most happy with. Actually, I am very happy with the goalkeeping position too. 🙂

We have a first choice CB partnership which has worked, and still works, really well. Mertesacker is no world beater, but his understanding with Koscielny is really good. I don't subscribe to the idea that Koscielny is the one doing all the heavy lifting either. Behind them we have Gabriel, who looks super talented. He seems to have everything in his locker for us to naturally phase out Mertesacker over the next two seasons. As 4th choice we have Chambers. He is 20 years old, and IMO looks like a world class talent. At his age, he isn't going to throw a tantrum and ask to leave because he will have restricted game time this season. He is also in an environment where he has really good role models to hone his game from.

I was not even in the slightest bit serious, Gabriel looks quality. Had a couple dodgy moments in his few games since joining us but looks very strong. Reminds me a bit of Kos' performances when he first came into the team. Good anticipation, pace and tackling with the odd mistakes here and there being of the mistimed variety. Difference is Gabs hasn't had any of his mistakes lead to a red card. penalty or a goal. Just needs a run of games to get used to the pace of the league, the understanding of his teammates as well as the language barrier.
