Err Meaty I was being ironic, of course there are many sports people who know how to jump but Mertesaker is not one of them, he never learned because of his height he never had to before but in the PL this is ruthlessly exposed.
Look at how someone like Tim Cahill or Alexis use their limited stature to attack the ball.

Heading the ball is all about positioning, timing and aggressiveness.

Height helps, but if you don't time your jump properly you will be beaten to the ball quite a bit.

And using your body to lean into and lever against people.

For a goalkeeper its very different though, because you have the obvious advantage you have to try to avoid contact as much as possible to keep it.

Yeah, if Hodgson wanted him to be on standby he should have said so. Can't expect Gibbs to sit at home and wait for a call in the event that one or two players get injured. If they're ahead of him three months before the Euros they'll be ahead of him during the tournament too.

Na, he hasn't really done anything wrong. It's just typical of how things have gone for him. Would have been a great chance to impress one last time before the Euros, instead he'll be in America again on holiday this summer whilst Danny Rose takes his place in France. And I wonder with Gibbs how much that would really upset him.

Had such high hopes for him once upon a time...

that emirates cup performance against inter was simply ok. he kept it simple and wasn't adventurous as a winger. you can see why he was pushed back.
