Agreed - isn't this a direct workaround of the FFP regulations? I don't know the rules, but does anything prevent, let's say, Sheikh Mansour of Man City from forming a shell company which owns some part of a player's rights, ensuring that the club only paid a part of the wage and the transfer free. The economics to the owner are pretty much the same (except for maybe some tax impact) and FFP is taken care of - n'est ce pas?

I don't think third party ownership is allowed in England. Doesn't stop them from doing it elsewhere and loaning the players like they did with Lampard, I guess.

Right est. Should have used a better example - I meant any club in Europe, let's say PSG, since FFP is a UEFA regulation. Is there a specific related party clause in the FFP regulations which prevents this?

uefa needs to get spain, portugal and italy on the same page as northern europe on this. those countries are more corrupt though, and theres obviously some shadiness in third party ownership. kickbacks, bribes, money laundering, tax evasion, etc.

Makes you despair when you see clubs like Porto and Benfica rake in £60 million each summer just because their business partners can pick South America clean on talent, doesn't it. These kids get involved with third party owners in an attempt to make a quick buck and then they're bandied around the lesser leagues in Europe. Thousands of them end up on the street when they prove to not be good enough. It's a form of human trafficking by exploiting legal loopholes.

Many European clubs have done the same thing to African talents in the past too, but FIFA have at least started to intervene there. I read this Norwegian book a few summers ago which estimated that roughly 20 000 young African players were now living as homeless in European cities: http://www.playthegame.org/news/news-articles/2010/europe-is-draining-africa-of-football-talent/

italy and portugal would probably have a short term collapse if 3rd party ownership was outlawed. ultimately it would be for the good of the game in the long term.
