We've missed that.
We don't take advantage of the majority of our set pieces.

We definitely don't and that's a big area for potential improvement with Robin around. FIFA 11 always mentions that Arsenal are a real danger from set pieces and after this season I always scoff whenever they mention that.

I want him to get fit already to replace Chamakh. Once him and Cesc are fit and ready to go, it's going to be awesome.

Theoretically, all three can play in the same line-up.

Yeah, he looked pretty good- great touches, and passing, but you also have to consider that the quality of most of his teammates and more importantly, the opposition, was considerably lower than standard.

technically they can and it would be nice to see but we would probably have better options (in the center or on the wings) to complement the team.

Cesc moves back to Wilshere's position and RvP comes into Cesc's position; there aren't two better options in the squad really.

Does anyone realistically think that we'll move Cesc back to central midfield though? I'd like to see it, but it's been quite some time since he's had an extended run there.

Whether it will actually happen is one thing, but the thought of Cesc as a deeper lying play maker feeding Van Persie supporting Chamakh (who also gives us a threat from crossing) just seems unstoppable to me. If this were to happen though, one of two things would need to happen in order to accommodate this:

  1. Song would have to drastically improve the defensive side of his game. None of this running into the opponent's box stuff, we'd need him to be a wall at the back. Hopefully he'd notice that with Cesc, Van Persie and Chamakh (and presumably Arshavin and Nasri on the wings) he won't be able to masquerade forward and he shouldn't need to as they are all far better than him offensively.

  2. We'd need to get someone other than Song to take his place and be more protective.

It'll be interesting to see what sort of action Wenger takes.

I genuinely do think Wenger is considering switching to 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 for certain games. I was really pleased to see firstly, who he picked to play on Tuesday night, and secondly, how exactly he set them out. Setting a team up with only one attacker and the insurance of an extra man in midfield is not needed in the vast majority of our games. It makes no logical sense, and just serves to make our job of breaking down the opposition even harder - we tend to wear them down, rather than open them up.

Didn't Wenger mention that in Arsenal.com already?

I know I keep saying it, but Cesc isn't an extra midfielder now.

I am in favour of this. As Captain said Cesc has been doing a bad Dennis Bergkamp impression for a while now. Why not give his position to a real attacker then and move him back?

Yeah, he did, but I can't seem to find it.

Maybe, but he sill drops really deep at times. It seems he's not there as that extra insurance when we need him. I don't doubt that's a fault with the system rather than Cesc being lazy - he can't threaten constantly in the final third and at the same time be there to always help out in defence.

I'd just like to see us keep it simple. 2 attackers when fancy our chances of overrunning our opponents, whether that's one playing off the other or both right up top, and 3 in midfield, 3 actual midfielders who share the defensive task equally, when we need the extra insurance and protection.

All this Robin talk...

Robin will just have to find a way to slot in when he returns. I doubt that he can give us a better target man presence than Chamakh, and he can't coordinate an offense better than either Fabregas or Nasri, both of who can also score when playing behind the striker.

He strikes me as an odd man out who will have to fit in at anyone of 3 positions (striker, hole, right attack) when we need to rest players

His introduction proved timely today - he cleared off the line and he laid the ball off to Nasri for his goal.

Just luck? Or experienced player knowing where to be and having the instinct and skill to play the quick lay off?

He needs a goal to get the taste back, becoming too much of a talented playmaker 😉
