We have 2 good LBs, but we will need to replace Sagna.

There is also every chance that Batushayi can turn out be Lukaku/Benteke in PL and that would be an inspired buy. They were the last 2 top scorers in Belgium league and Batushayi is following the trend.

We have two decent-ish leftbacks who will need an upgrade in the next two years anyway. There's a potentially great one on the market this summer.

Monreal is 28, Gibbs is 24. No reason why Gibbs cannot play for another 10 years with us, and Monreal can be his backup for at least another 5 years.

I agree with you that Shaw is a great fullback in the making, but I wouldn't buy him this summer at the expense of a great right back because the latter's need is more pressing. 20m on Coleman instead would sound like a better investment for me. Unfortunately there is not a chance we will spend close to 50m on 2 fullbacks so we can only choose 1.

I don't want Gibbs to be our first choice for another ten years.

I think the situation is similar to Özil last summer. You go for the top players when and if they are on the market, even if there might be more pressing needs. I still think we can get Sagna to sign, but either way there doesn't seem to be too many available rightbacks around. I'd try for Lichtsteiner perhaps. He's 30 and only has a year left. Juve might sell him. He won't go for an exorbant sum in that case.

elite fullbacks are usually the difference between a good attacking team and a great one, but i don't see wenger upgrading fullbacks unless someone in those positions leaves

Who knows. I didn't expect him to sign Sagna when we had Eboue and I didn't expect him to go for Özil when we had Cazorla. I think he's interested if the opportunity is there and he rates the player.

Note that I have removed only players who are marginal. That's what we need. We need 3 guys who can come in, play ₃₀ games each a season and allow us to rest our incumbents. Then we can challenge on multiple fronts

Be great if we can hang on to Vermaelen. He's looked solid in recent outings, I'd feel fairly confident with just our existing three CBs heading into next season.

We've been lucky with injuries to our CBs this season because at no point have 2 of them been out at the same time. Think we need one more.

In an ideal world we'd buy someone who has a real chance of becoming 1st choice but, in reality, if Verms stays we'll get another Squillaci. Old and cheap.

I think it's more likely we'll sign some seventeen year old kid who Wenger's scouts rate. Or maybe we'll just keep Miquel around.

Ozil-Cazorla and Shaw-Gibbs comparison is interesting. In terms of quality I also think that sort of difference will open up. Shaw looks like a truly world class talent and Gibbs doesn't. That said Gibbs has shown a lot of improvement IMO. He's not perfect but this season he has shown consistency which is the main challenge in younger players. I think Gibbs will kick on next season and it'll help him if we have a reliable option LW instead of chopping and changing with Wilshere, Cazorla, Podolski, Gnabry etc.

Gibbs is our own and I'm happy for him to be LB for us even if he doesn't reach Shaw's potential. Wenger did go for Ozil but Ozil and Cazorla can still play in the same team. Gibbs and Shaw can't and I don't think Wenger is ruthless enough to block Gibbs' development.

Wenger has never spent big on a defender, even by our own standards. And we've a pretty strong defence already.

He spent £42m which was massive but every other time he's broken our record or come close its an AM/winger; Arshavin, Reyes, Cazorla, etc

His biggest problem is his inability to stay fit in my opinion. We can't have that in the long run.
