don't think it's that simple. if they win the league or even finish close, they could be a target for investment. they can at least bank on some Champions League money and pass that all directly to the banks.

There are loads of tax issues with Spanish release clauses.
The player has to pay the clause himself, so Costa would pay the money to Atletico. Arsenal would have to give him the money so that he could do it, the problem is that Costa would have to pay income tax on the money he receives from Arsenal. So, if his release clause is 37m then Arsenal will have to give him whatever sum of money equals 37m after tax.
It's weird though, Javi Martinez didn't have to pay income tax in the end when Bayern paid his release clause, but other transfers have had to do so in the past.
