Ferdinand cost 30m 13 years ago. Stones is on that level and will probably end up going for 40m.

And thats what I mean about us not needing to spend most of our transfer budget on a centre back. Maybe Stones would start for us but its not definite and because of that its not worth the spending.

Kos is 30 though. How many top seasons does he have left? Two? Three? The day he slows down our defence will have a crisis on its hands. I'd rather secure someone like Stones and then let Everton loan him for a while if we don't need him right away. It's the way Chelsea have done business for ages now. It worked for them.

We should really be doing this more for talents to gamble on. Problem for us is Stones is probably already out of our price range. Might need 50m to price him out of Everton next season.

I agree with this. I think we should go for very top young talents (Stones and Tielemans) and loan them back if necessary rather missing out on the top players and doing nothing.

I agree - whoever gets Stones has their defence sorted for the next decade.

Plus, like you say, if we loan him back to Everton for another season the odds are we might get a better deal as well.

Nobody pays £40m for a player and loans him back.

Maybe not right now, but in the future I bet they will. The money keeps getting bigger and so does the transfer fees. No one is going to pick up a top class talent for a few million. Offer some players the other way to keep the transfer fee somewhat reasonable if we have to. Plus there's nothing that suggests Stones wouldn't start for us in the present, so he'd probably walk into the team a year from now too.

It's obvious he'll end up at Chelsea. They need him because Terry is past it and Zouma is pap.

Stones is alright, may be great one day, but has become seriously overrated. Makes a lot of mistakes at the back, bad decisions. He's obviously got ability on the ball for a CB, that's where the hype is coming from, but he's by no means the finished article and I'd wager he'd be on the bench for us.

this is the type of defender being produced now, and they've become crucial for attacking teams. ball playing cb's are almost a must these days

I think the talent and skill are obviously there, we'll see how he develops. It's position that requires so much experience, you can't just walk into any 11 on talent alone.

A big factor is they have gone out to get the players. Mandzukic, Dybala and Morata signed at a time when there are no strikers available according to Wenger.

I agree he should have gone for Morata (instead of Welbeck) but neither would walk into our first 11 and solve our problems
