What is the point of dreaming of getting exciting top stars here playing for us when you know that Wenger simply will never do what's required to make sure of a capture, instead relying on chance and circumstance to get a lucky bargain.
You know there are others who are willing to go distance.
It's not about going the distance, it's about spending the money. And since building a squad is a resource optimisation game after a certain point it becomes stupid for us to chase players against strong opposition.
The bidding for Draxler might open at £35m which would already make him the second most expensive player we've ever signed. Would you say we should still be in for such a player at £40m, £48m, £57m? That's what "going the distance" means when your opposition is City or Madrid.
There might be times when our need for a specific player is such that it's worth spending 50% above a more normal valuation, but it's usually pure fan speculation and sour grapes.
