He said he wanted to move to a bigger club. He took the bold move to play in europe, something Mexicans don't tend to do but always viewed Ajaccio as a stepping stone.
But why did he only play three seasons for Ajaccio? I suppose it's not unheard of, but it strikes me as pretty odd to sign a three-year contract when you're in your mid-twenties.
He has always been a wonderkid when he was young, being the youngest keeper to appear in Mexican's league at the age of 17. Was always capable of wondersaves but also some calamitous errors, which is understandable for someone so young. But Mexico also always had some great keepers which meant he was never first choice for the last 2 world cup.
PSG was keen to buy him in 2011, but he got tested positive for drugs after Gold Cup. As his stock decreases, nobody wanted to take a punt on him when he was keen on moving to europe to improve himself. Then, one Mexican TV company signed a contract to broadcast Ligue 1 and as part of the deal, he sponsored his move to Ajaccio and he signed a 3 year contract + 1 year option with his salary paid partly by the TV company too. As the deal ended and the TV company didn't want to continue paying for his salary, Ajaccio didn't take up that option so he was left on a free.
Its important to note that he was some sort of a late entry into Herrera's squad because of a mixed season in France. He wasn't expected to be called up and certainly wasn't expected to be first choice as Herrera particularly liked the other 2 keepers. I guess he saw something he liked in training about Ochoa. He only played some minutes in one of Mexico's warm up matches before the world cup.
