this. the reason we always say we're 2 short is because.... we're always 2 short. as kami said, we'll solve one problem, while letting multiple holes in the squad open up. never thought a lack of striking power would be an issue for one of wengers teams, but here we are.

i believe there's a window of opportunity when you really should do everything to strengthen your squad. i think last summer was just that - no major international competition in the off-season, no major departures on our end, direct qualification for the CL. this summer we have the wc, will most likely have to fuck around qualifying for the CL, and - as above - we will probably be losing 1-2 senior players like sagna or verms who will need replacing. the feeling of seeing this type of predictable bs on the horizon over, and over, and over is what's driving gooners mad and turning them against the manager

Sagnas not a £20m player. He's never been at that level and now he's way off it. A canny signing could see him replaced for £7m or so. I agree its a job we could do without but it looks inevitable at this stage.

If we replace him with the right player it could be a really helpful move though. A proactive manager wouldn't see Sagna as a stuck on starter for next season even if he wanted to stay.

Who are these £7m players that could match Sagna's level? Monreal cost as much and even though he's a Spanish international, he's turned out to be rubbish. Miles off Sagna.

He's easily a £20 million player in the current market. It's not just the money either, it's the turmoil. You lose an important player and one of the most experienced guys in the team. Even if you replace properly there's a risk that it doesn't work out. We could do without that extra uncertainty during a summer where we already need a couple of new starting players.

A proactive manager wouldn't have Carl Jenkinson as the immediate backup, that much is true. We would have blooded someone in by now who could be ready to take over next year. Then again maybe that's exactly what we've been doing...

Just because Monreal was an incredibly bad signing doesn't mean everyone else would be too. Zabeleta cost less than £7m and he's better than Sagna.

Ramsey cost £5 million and he's better than any other central midfielder in the league. It doesn't mean we'll get another top player for £5 million this summer.

There's a reason Zabaleta cost very little when City signed him. Bloke was utter shit when he arried in England. Rarely have I seen a player improve as much as he has done.

Sagna is undoubtedly top tier. The idea that he would enter some heavy decline next season is nothing but pure conjecture as far as I'm concerned. He's consistently been one of the best defenders in Europe, never mind Premier League, for the past five or six years. Show me a player who guarantees something similar and would be sold for anything less than £20 million and I'll bite your hand off.
