Yeah, I think it's the same in Swedish if you look it up in a dictionary. It's not a great translation though. Bitch is both too broad and too strong.

Language is a minefield, especially when two words appear to mean the same thing their conceptions are different.
EG in French con is cunt, but to the French it means idiot (as in diner des cons). In English the meaning is of course much more brutal.

Biggus: Yeah, I find it's often like that. English is rich on synonyms but it's sometimes lacking the finer nuances. The semantic meaning seems absolute and whenever you need to broaden it you add a bunch of descriptive adjectives, whereas Swedish and French (and to some degree German) are more context-sensitive languages.

It's the first summer we've had that much spending power. Spending nothing, paying off debt and remaining in the top four is what has gotten us to a good place financially. The way I see it, Wenger has had one summer where he could spend plenty, and he signed a 40m player. You can't say it's an isolated event when you haven't yet seen what comes after. If he signed nothing from 05 to 07, signed Özil in 08 and signed nothing before now, then you could say it was an isolated event.

Yeah, Özil was an exception. He would have been an exception even at some of the richest clubs in the world. The difference is whether you believe that this sudden obliveration of every previous transfer record signifies a change in transfer policy or not. Biggus point was actually pretty literal more along the lines of: Wenger won't ever spend real money because he thinks it's unfair to unbalance the market. In this light Özil was just a one time incident to get people off his back or whatever.

Personally I think it's a clear shift in transfer policy. We probably won't blow 42 million on a single footballer anytime soon again, but we will be scouting in the 20-30 million bracket this summer as opposed to the 10-15 million bracket like we've done previous summers. We'll make more than one signing that surpasses the old transfer record, and we won't sell any key players (apart from Sagna who's out of contract).

If there's really a shift in transfer policy we'll spend £40m nett this window, and we'll identify and land a couple of major targets or one superstar—the abridged version of what you just posted.

Call me cautious but I'd rather judge after the window than before it.

Right, and no one has said anything to the contrary I believe. The issue people took strides against was that "42m is not a large amount of money to spend on a player for teams who are hoping to win the PL & CL". It's a huge amount no matter how you choose to look at it. The whole point of portraying it as something ordinary was perhaps to support an outdated agenda after spending the entire last summer banging on about how Arsenal and Wenger would never really spend anywhere near the £40 million they bid for Suarez on any player, ever. Now it has turned into something everyone does on a whim if they have any illusions about being champions instead.

Another way to look at it, I guess, is to forget the numbers and consider that people have consistently said we wouldn't spend enough to win the league.

We still haven't done that, so in that sense they're absolutely right. As for the amount of money required, that's for Wenger to work out. But £40m is still a long, long way from the total amount invested by most of our rivals.

You have (and I've) done a fair share of ranting about Wenger's transfer market reticence in the past twelve months.

I feel pretty cautious about this supposed change in our transfer parameters, but I do think we'll at least be bidding on players in the £20-30m bracket this summer.

I think its foing to take 2 or more of these 20-30m players to challenger next year. My concerns that we won't step up to break our previous record twice in one off season.
