This wage bill issue was raised in a presser a few years ago and thats what Wenger said - thought the figures were completely wrong iirc. I don't doubt we've lost a fair bit on unmotivated wasters but we've trimmed our squad in the summer and I don't think we could be very close to Chelsea. Hopefully we should have the capacity to fund a 3-4 more players on big wages on top of what we've got now. That could make our squad competitive enough.

Yeah, we publish our total wage expenditure (salary + bonuses + image rights + other stuff). Whereas other clubs only publish base salary, which means that in reality their wage expenditure is way higher than ours.

I could be wrong though, this is from memory and I can't be arsed looking it up 🙂

Bonuses are paid directly out of the club's coffers so are clearly part of any wage bill and image rights are earnings paid directly to the player, by-passing the club's coffers often in return for a reduced basic salary (Michael Jordan/Nike come to mind).
They are both clearly part of the players wages and amounts paid are of great interest to the exchequer for taxable purposes (Barcelona/Neymar) and surely, after what Wenger said, all those years ago, there must be "proper" comparison figures in the public domain.

Whatever Wenger decides he should man up and make a commitment as soon as possible so everyone knows where we stand. I imagine that both current players and potential summer targets have a stake in knowing who the manager next season will be.

^ yep, he is being pretty egotistical to think that everybody can wait for him while Arsenal, the fans, the players and the board (feck them though) and the backroom boys (is that a band or Steve Wrights team?) are in turmoil.

I think he is dying to sign it, but fears upsetting Biggus.

If I were him, I'd state to the press now that that I'd decide my future right after the last ball of the season is kicked.

Put a timeframe on the decision and reveal absolutely nothing about it.

Agreed. If he does decide to go its a big distraction for the players.

If he's staying for definite he should announce though. Has he let it go this late in his contract before without signing da ting?

If I was Wenger I'd take as much time as possible to make this decision too. Pretty big for him and his family I'd guess. And I don't think him making any sort of statement is needed. Problem is that the board, as usual, are happy to just muddle along waiting for Wenger to make up his mind.

He's staying. My guess is that it's likely his last contract and he's thinking about the number of years he wants to sign on for.

6 million reasons to sign. If I payed you an extremely high salary and would realistically never terminate your contract and you loved the job (except it's gotten much harder and you now sort of suck at it) would you leave!?

Where would Wenger go anyway? A results based club where trophies matter and directors of football and presidents actually gasp make decisions? It's either retirement or signing da ting for Wenger imo.

If I'd been earning millions for donkey's years in this job, and could leave and still earn millions doing a much less stressful job ( like punditry, or writing my autobiography for eg, or managing in Qatar) I probably wouldn't be too fussed about basing my decision on money.

That's such a superficial, tabloidy take on the situation.

Am I being overly naive in thinking that maybe Wenger's lost some of his love for the job?
That maybe the sporadic hammerings that we get dished out have taken their toll and he's at a stage in his life where he's questioning whether he has the energy left to see out another contract?
That the reason he hasn't signed is that he doesn't want to announce he's leaving while there are games left to be played or that he genuinely has not made up his mind?
He is prone to a little bit of dither.

Just imagine what would happen if Wenger signed a contract and we finished outside of the top 4 and bottled the final as well. There would be riots. He hasn't signed yet because the supporters aren't on his side anymore, he needs to win them over. And if he fails he's gone.

Wenger will 100% sign on if we finish 4th and win the FA Cup, which will probably happen.

Oh I'm sure he hates the hammerings but I think he enjoys seeing players go from duds to Ramsey even more. But if he thinks he can't give 100% he'll retire.
