To all those who agree with this, what do you think is Mata's current market value?
Current market value is the highest someone is willing to pay for him which is clearly £37m. What I would consider to be fair value is £25m when taking into consideration his age and versatility. He's a Nasri/Di Maria level player. He's a good piece but hardly a paradigm shifter. Mourinho is a ho but I think he has (unfortunately) been spot on with regards to his handling of Mata. Mata's reputation is mostly a hype job. Independent of all concerns with regard to specific team balance, I think Hazard, Oscar and Willian are all superior players in a vacuum.
So Mata at 25, who is now proven in the PL, CL & Europa league winner, is now worth roughly the same he was when he joined Chelsea 2-3 years ago? I disagree.
But even assuming that's the case (ie his market value should be 25m), it means Chelsea are only making 12m more than the'd elsewhere, is that big an incentive to strengthen your rival?
Put it this way, I'd rather we had sold Van Judas to Juve for say, £15m than what we sold him for to Man United. 10-12m is worth nothing these days, even talented kids who have achieved nothing in the game go for £20m+.
I'm not a huge Mata fan, but I thought he was at least as good as Oscar and Hazard before Mourinho's arrival. Even their fans or players felt the same way given the fact that they voted him their best player for 2 seasons running. But maybe they just all had a special affection for him.
