Don't get me wrong, it's still a mistake on their part if that's how it happened. I think it might be enlarged by all the turmoil surrounding the defence though.

Maybe, but's let just say for instance that they are instructed to mark zonally and they can see that Kaboul is coming into the front post area; why doesn't Song, as the 'enforcer' tell Cesc to swap with him or maybe even vice-versa?

It's all going in a bit of a circle now but are they really that incapable of sensing danger? These are highly paid professionals with years of footballing experience.

it doesn't exactly take a genius to figure it out, does it? wenger likes to spout bullshit about having 11 captains on the pitch, but hardly anyone out there knows what they're doing. i saw enough when a geriatric sol campbell came back and he still looked like he had something that the others didn't.

Which is why it was so daft for Wenger to remove Djourou from the back four for Saturday's game.
He'd played himself into form and looked to be settling into the set-up.
Kos had, to my eyes, lost confidence following his injury and time out from suspension and though he made some good interceptions he looked very shaky at times on Saturday.

It should be obvious to all now that Wenger cares next to nothing about defence and defending, and those on the coaching staff that do are marginalised.

I would not play koscielny until has added a bit more weight and power to his frame.

Wenger underrates physical power these days which is staggering as it appeared to be one of the main attributes he looked for in players six or seven years ago.

Well its not like Kos is getting beaten physically every week. I think the problem is that he is far too quick to rush into tackles, he need to take a few tips from Squillaci about staying on your feet. Its no coincidence that you see Squillaci make less spectacular tackles and also less mistakes. Kos gets caught out and has to take risks.

Exactly one Tottenham player makes any sort of move into the box and we have Cesc marking him in front and RvP behind. Song, Squillaci and Kos are all standing in no man's land; why on earth did none of them take the responsibility to mark Tottenham's biggest threat. It's almost as bad as that Chelsea game last season (I think) when Diaby was telling Theo to mark Terry.

The 'challenge' from VanPersie was pathetic too.

It was a poor challenge by RVP, but not much fault of the defenders because they and others were concentrating on Pav and Crouch IIRC

Nah mate. Palacios doesn't make a run and Crouch is covered at the back post by Sagna; the three I mentioned are marking thin air.

Amazing. If you want to see more madness in our marking, just look at the far side of the box whenever we are defending a corner. If the corner is taken and the ball goes past the goal to the other side of the field, our players are always incredibly slow to respond and go pick up the opposition player on the far wing. They all stand around looking at each other wondering who should pick up the man on the wing.

yeah.. it was Fabregas and Squillachi?, in the 2nd half, when the ball rolled down to the left wing.. right? I haven't seen the game again, but I remember that moment clearly. I just shook my head sadly. Pathetic. Schoolboy stuff. We are so ignorant of the basics of defending as a team, it's unreal. Nothing a month or two of solid drilling couldn't change though, but of course that's beneath us.

I just want to delete this game from my memory asap.

On the bright side, sp*rs must have felt like this for decades...we simply must restore balance in the World soon, it's all gone tits up, can't carry on.

It does seem quite amazing when you look at the mood among fans being at an all time low, yet we could be top of the league (albeit for a short time) on Saturday.

I think a Villa win will ease a lot of the doom and gloom but to get any sort of belief back and put the last week behind us we're going to need to go on a great run, getting at least 4 points off United and Chelsea as well as beating the likes of Fulham and Stoke.
