Since the goal thread causes such debate, I reckon people are equally divided when it comes to the best, most spectacular, gravity defying save they have had the pleasure to witness.

Just to make things extra clear - I appreciate that we are all Arsenal fans here, but since most of us happen to actually like the game of football itself, it is perfectly ok to fancy a save made by someone who has no connection at all to Arsenal.

I nominate this one by the clown that was RenΓ© Higuita. I remember seeing it and not really believing what my eyes told me I had just seen. Needed a replay or two to fully grasp it. I know it was a friendly, but still.

"And it's... not gone in? How has it not gone in?"

I watched this game on a Danish channel. Peter Schmeichel was in the studio. He said it was the greatest save he's ever seen. Good enough for me.

πŸ˜† That was my second choice...

Then there is this one, after the whistle has blown. The man doesn't even break stride ffs!

You could probably pick any save from Buffon's top 20. He's made so many outrageous ones over the years.

Love that one, so fucking nonchalant πŸ˜†

I love Lehmann
Look at his work at 1m 30 seconds in the attached video

I was there, down the other end of the ground. We all thought that was in, celebrated as if it was an Arsenal goal when we realised it wasn't. Such a good save, I wrote something about it for the Arsenal Collective website a couple of years ago.

Nobody can beat Lehmann's save against Soljskaer or Raul.

That Solsjkaer save was pretty special. Almost as good as the Norwegian's reaction to it.

Yeah Lehmann against Solsjkaer always springs to mind.

Can't remember specifically what game it was but De Gea made an absolutely unbelievable save in his first season at Man United..

In re: to Buffon - goalies of all sports are a crazy lot....skip to :33

Just watch for 3 secs at the 3 min point then close the thread.

Always Seaman vs Sheffield United for me. In the goals thread a common theme is things that have never been repeated and I don't think a save like this has been. I mean, it was in wasn't it? The guy was virtually in the goal when he headed it. Like Wilshere's goal the other day, you had to see replays to fully appreciate it.

Lehmann's match winner at United was special as was the save from Raul. When Solskjear hit it you just thought "oh well, 1-1, not bad." His reaction was priceless.

i remember my heart sinking when that play unfolded, the goal gaping, with raul of all people about to shoot, knowing that we were about to get knocked out of europe, and then lehmann somehow gets a fingertip on it despite flying towards the near post, which just barely sends it round the post. what a save, esp given the circumstances.

That was possibly the best 0–0 draw I've watched

Agreed. That was one of the best CL performances from us ever and I don't think I'll ever forget that save from Lehmann on Raul. Unworldly.

Hopefully we'll go on a similar run again this season.

i always point people to those two legs when they say you can't have good football without goals. those games were something to savour.

That 2nd leg had everything. I remember Henry running through their entire team and shooting wide with what would have been his best ever goal, and of course Pires almost scoring from halfway when the keeper was up but for Roberto Carlos getting back to the goalline just in time. 1 more roll and it would have been the tie over.
