Need to post it. The angle at 1:30 is the best to illustrate the ridiculousness of it. Damn ball is almost heading for the corner flag! Barthez' reaction also says it all. Never in a million years could he see that ball being anywhere near his goal.

When I think of the 'best goal' I lean towards those that are incredibly memorable. For me, Roberto Carlos' free kick was just that....once you've seen it you'll never forget it. That its never been repeated as well says it all too.

Beckham vs Greece is amazing not for the technique as there are 20+ comparable free kicks a year but because of the pressure.

So naturally Bergkamp vs Newcastle trumps Bergkamp vs Argentina because the latter has been replicated by others, and even Bergkamp in other games.

Other goals that stand out: Ronaldinho's two goal haul vs Madrid, Ronaldinho vs Chelsea, Seedorf's long range blast, Essien vs Arsenal, Di Canio vs Wimbeldon and:

Will never forget seeing that goal as it happened. A real "did you see that?" moment, like Alex Kintner being killed by the shark in Jaws. Only with less shark.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but my favourite goal I've seen live at a game has to Wrighty's in 1993 (20 fucking years ago- how did that happen?) against Everton. Is it the best one? I can't think of any others to top it right now.

Roberto Carlos? Pfft. Charlie Yankos did that years before, playing for Australia. When we beat Argentina 4:1. 🙂

I don't think Carlos freekick is that good either. It just spins a lot because the distance is so great. The most impressive thing about it is the power in Carlos's leg muscles. Mikael Nilsson scored a much better one for IFK Gothenburg against PSG in the nineties:

I love this one from Pirlo. The way it just floats in from so far out. It's not travelling very fast but it's in the top corner, unreachable for the keeper from the moment it leaves his foot. The replay from behind him shows how the ball doesn't even spin or rotate, just flies straight in.

I remember that Pirlo goal. That trajectory of the ball is very special. Super technique.

Not the most spectacular bicycle kick ever maybe but the best goal I've seen in the flesh, scored by the player on debut for Wellington in the A League.

Klausie, I've seen enough Roberto Carlos freekicks that fly out of the stadium to not be overly impressed with his one or two that actually made it. I have more respect for Pirlo and Cristiano as their freekicks tend to be close to goal most of the time.

I agree that Carlos in general was an over rated freekick taker due to his poor success rate. The ones he got right though, and that one in particular, were all pretty memorable.

Obviously not the best goal of all time but another banana shot from Bobby Carlos you may not have seen due to the nature of the game.. I was there too. Had the perfect view from right behind it.
