Would definitely take a quality striker like Benteke or Michu in the winter. This season's our chance and no matter who we sign in summer we might not find ourselves in a similar position.

If Podolski was still at Koln, and we had the option of bringing him either him, Michu or Benteke, who do you think most of the forum would have gone for?

Poldi has more than enough about him to be able to do a job there when Giroud is out. So I'd much rather we wait and sign someone top class or someone who's going to be top class and offers something different to Giroud. Bit of quick feet, skill and trickery.

I don't think he's been playing well at all lately. The role is vital to the team though and he's had a number of very good performances, but it stands to reason that anyone playing up front for an extended period of time would be involved in a lot of goals. He's a second or a third tier striker. They aren't hard to find at all in january if you've got money to spend.

Loan for this season, buy top class in the summer. Simple.

Giroud does a thankless job up front as he's usually left alone to battle 2 centrehalves. When we don't have Walcott or Podolski in the side he's extremely isolated and with that in mind I think he's done an admirable job so far this season. Notice that when Podolski plays to his left he does a much better job.

We still need a new striker though, obviously.

He's not isolated. The attacking third of the field is fairly congested with Arsenal players. Granted, Giroud gets most of the physical duels but that's part of being a centreforward. Any other lone striker gets the same deal.

I disagree. The distance between Giroud and a team mate is usually quite big, especially when the defence lumps the ball up towards him. The likes of Wilshere, Rosicky and Cazorla like to build from deep rather than make runs to either side of Giroud so he rarely has an opportunity to flick it through to a teammate in and around the box which is one of his strong suits. Usually his job is just to receive the ball and then send it back with his first touch since he's unable to take the ball and turn a defender. When he has runners beside him he's much more productive.

In fact I'm willing to bet that once Walcott or Podolski enter the side, Giroud's numbers will ramp up.

we need to get a striker. let's not repeat the mistake of not brining back Anelka 5 years ago.
Get a Benteke or Michu in. 20, 25M might seem expensive but if it gets us over the line in June, then it would have been a real bargain

I can. And Pedro rumours have been floating around for a couple of windows. Much more realistic chance to sign him than Reus or Suarez.

No it's not. Just have a look at the average positional maps or the heat maps. Özil is basically threading him on the heels. He's even positioned higher up than Giroud in a lot of games. This doesn't help the team in any way since Giroud is a fairly poor passer who can't dribble. If he'd kept his position instead of going looking for the ball on his own we would be better off.

Klaus, have you ever played as a striker though? When you are not getting service, it's hard to not go back and try to help the team in build-up play.

There is plenty of service. He just have to wait for it. Instead he ventures into midfield and we have no striker. This is why we have so few shots in every game.

To elaborate further, if you need a striker who comes down in midfield in search for the ball then you need someone else than Giroud entirely.
