Yes but they sold many other players over the last 6 years and previous to the signing of Ozil there was a lot made from player sales than spent on them. Think about all the big fees for Adebayor, Clichy, Nasri, Fabregas, RVP, etc
Wenger has said on more than one occasion that he needs to make a profit of £15 million before he can think about spending any money though. Most of the cash we got for Adebayor and Touré was invested in new contracts. Wages have been the single biggest issue for any growing football club for a while now. The inflation over the last decade has been crazy.
When we won the league in 01/02 our wage bill was £61 million. Last time we looked competitive, in 07/08, it was £101 million. In the year that ended in may 2013 it was £143 million. That's an increase by £82 million (and we're still some way off the big three in England).
