I think Rooney might be the target next summer when his contract only has 12 months left. Doubt we can do anything big in January, a decent young defender will do for me and loan a striker.

Got into a drunken argument with a mate last night about Mesut's status in world football and is he in Top 10 best players in the world list. He was trying to say he isnt, i told him to list better players than Özil. So he had ... Messi, Ronaldo, Ibra, RvP, Falcao, Ribery ... then it got more tricky ... Reus, Robben ... i contested both ... and that's where we ended up with Özil.

Who did we forget? Cesc, Iniesta ...

One person who knows Ozil better than most is Arsenal and Germany centre-back Per Mertesacker, 28, who was also part of the Werder Bremen team that reached the UEFA Cup final in 2009. That thrilling European run will no doubt have helped convince Real Madrid to splash out €20 million on Ozil a year later.

Speaking after Germany's win over Austria, Mertesacker said he could not have envisaged that the two players would be reunited in London three years later.

"To be honest I wasn't expecting it, simply because with a team like Real Madrid you couldn't just assume that Mesut Ozil would still be on the market," he said.

"I knew for a long while that Arsene Wenger was thinking about Ozil a bit, but actually signing him, that would be a big surprise. Because of that we're really thrilled, and I think we're really going to enjoy having him.

"We had a lot of conversations in the national team. Of course we discussed what it's like in London, what life is like there, what the trainer is like, what the club is like.

"I think he got a very good feeling that he could be really liked there, and that life there is very anonymous and very good. I think that perhaps he had that in the back of his mind."

So Wenger do talk to his players about who he likes?

Thinking about it, as good as Ozil is, its funny how often he is omitted when people draft up their dream teams.

No, but word gets around. I mean if AFCamden can get a scoop then I'd expect one of our senior players to be ITK.

Yes yes this is a delayed reaction. I've been off the map since 2 hours before the deadline ended...
It's amazing that we actually pulled this signing off. 42mil seems like a bargain compared to the other fees paid during this crazy summer. It sucks that we didn't add a couple more players but we should be fine until Jan unless we suffer massive injuries. It's going to be an interesting season that's for sure!

I know he's not the be all as defensive midfielders go, but I do find it strange that everyone just ignores the fact that we signed Flamini.
