This is a guy who could've featured in 4 to 5 World Cups in his career, but it is not to be

I think it is worth pointing out that Diaby has the same injury as Walcott has, has had the same surgery Walcott will have, and Wenger today is doubtful whether he will be back this season at all.

I know Diaby is a special case when it comes to injuries, but I think it is fair to point out that when talking about ACL injuries it is 6 months minimum. I'd even go as far as saying that 6 months is very, very optimistic.

7 months would be the start of preseason. 8 months puts his return in August, end of preseason.

Adrian Peterson had arguably the best ever season by an NFL player 7/8 months after completing shredding his knee. His genetics and dedication to rehab were off the charts though. Not sure about Walcott's work rate.

I see a lot of talk about Peterson! I'd say that one of the reasons for that is that his story is anything but normal.

No guarantee that it heals the way it's intended to either, that's the scary part. Look at Rossi. He had just completed the rehab and started training again when he reinjured the ACL in his right knee. He's lucky he was so young. Another ten months on the sideline would have spelled the end for most careers.

Think I read that Walcott is getting some new type of ACL surgery, done by Belgians. May speed up recovery. I reckon he'll be back in time for mid pre-season.

Is it possible to play with a torn ACL?

Don't think so. The knee will give out because there's no stability. It usually swells up immediately. You know that you've done some serious damage even if it doesn't. The pain is overwhelming.

You can wear a brace apparently, but it's a stupid idea.

There is actually a guy in the NBA who plays without ACLs in BOTH his knees. That guy is a freak though. 🙂

IG, lots of nutcases (surgeons) stepped forward and offered Walcott alternative, speedier treatments. He is doing the 'normal' one though.

It is possible. Lot of rugby league players choose not to have surgery. Billy Slater the Australian fullback doesn't have an ACL in either knee.

If its a straight forward rupture 6 months is about right.

Lindsey Vonn (competitive downhill racer) has been trying to ski without an ACL....not working out well.

Think you could get by in some sports/intensities but certainly not at a truly competitive level.
