I've thought that with the new system and the type of transfer activity to date, that the current rebuild has been done with the focus very much on the likes of AM-N, Nelson, N'ketiah & Co as the squad core going forward.
IMO the current squad is to provide the platform for them by regaining top4 so they can step up without that added pressure for when they become the match day core.
Saw an article that suggested that our 'English Core' may not have failed as opposed to taking a break, and that the new wave of talent actually has a manager and system that can enable them to succeed to achieve their potential.
That said it would still be a massive step up for him to be considered as part of the 1st team match day squad for next season & the same applies for Smith-Rowe, although they could both become core to the UEFA and domestic cup teams.
