You guys really don't realise how badly Arteta has fallen off?

Any kind of pressure on him and he can't cope. It was clear last year he's not physically capable anymore.

In the matches Arteta has actually been fit this season he's been one of our best performers. His physical decline is most clearly manifested in his inability to stay fit, not because of this mythical drop-off in his performances.

Disagree. Cazorla is far more nimble and can use that to compensate forr his slight frame, whereas Arteta seems to get crushed any time someone gets physical with him.

It's a good thing that it is impossible to pick a best 11 as every opposition team has different strengths and weaknesses.
The players, also, have different strengths and weaknesses and our best team against dortmund would not be the same as our best team versus villa.

But he doesn't. Santi is a liability when he doesn't have space to play in. That's why he copes so much better deeper in the field than he did as a playmaker. And even then he can't tackle to save his life. Arteta is just a smarter player all around.

Both players are highly technical and can get past pressure at times. But both of them have the same problem, they can't cope with physicality.

Santi's definitely not a liability when he doesn't have space. In fact he thrives using his quick feets to get past lots of pressure. I would have thought the "he can't tackle, he doesn't intercept" debate is dead by this season, after so many evidence of him putting good defensive work in. The description you made is actually perfectly suited for Ramsey.

Anyway while we are on this debate, how great is it to have someone like Coquelin who copes superbly with pressure as our deepest midfielder now?

Agree, Coquelin instead of Arteta and Monreal instead of Gibbs and that's our best XI.

I would pick that as my start 11.

TBH IMO atm Sanchez is the only starting player based upon form and position from that XI.

Can not believe that Coquelin is not included, and that we're still thinking that we're playing 4231.
IMO we've been playing 4141 all season but the positioning of the WFs and CMs has differed with their roles,
and the lack of balance.

Arteta is done though. I wish he'd been there tonight but week in week out he's not going to manage. He's too slow and he isn't going to come back for
This injury with more pace.

I'd keep him at the club as back up though. He's steady and can come in now and then. Plus I think he's a great influence on the rest.

Which is why I'd look to play him at CM as DLP in some games rather than play a B2B role or 2nd AM type - he's not going to wander upfield and leave Coquelin isolated.

If we're shutting up shop then he'd be ok. Arteta and Coq have opposite flaws, Arteta is immobile and Coq is quite gung ho in chasing things. In the summer I think you could get someone with Artetas strengths plus mobility, aerial ability and strength. Then that player could be our main CM pairing with Ramsey for 75% of games and forming a trio in midfield with Ramsey/Coq in tougher games.

Arteta shouldn't be any more than a squaddie going forward though. Chuck Flamini and sign a top midfielder, shuffle the rest down a place in the pecking order.

TBH I wouldn't have Rambo as a starting player on form this season & same with any of Wlshere & Ox.

I'd sign an upgrade at both DM and a physical CM with attack/creativity being the least required attribute. I want a midfield that provides support to the defence and attack, rather than being the focus of the play.

I'd play Ozil in the middle and Rambo instead of Wilshere, and Welbeck ahead of Giroud, and Ox on the flank.

In the summer I'd rebuild the team around Ozil and Sanchez.
