The more I think about this I come to the conclusion that Wenger's creating another project team despite the couple of world-class arrivals in the last 12-15 months-
Goalkeepers- One decent keeper who at the moment doesn't seem to be pushing on like De Gea and one gamble that might or might not come off in Ospina.
Defence- We have 2 decent left backs, one decent and one good centre-back, one decent right back and 2 project players while promising could go either way. Whatever way you put it there is only one player of true quality and he's 30 this year.
Central Midfield- DM's-Arteta's only getting older and could do a job against the lesser sides. Flamini is a filler. Coquelin looks decent but this is a player who's had indifferent spell at Charlton. Neglected for the last 3 years. Ramsey has the other spot for me but his form has suffered as a result of injuries and being shifted further forward where he has to pass more incisively which is one his weaker skills and can do less defensive work together with the DM.
Attacking Central Midfield- Ozil had 3 immobile players in front of him last year more or less as Walcott and the ox suffered injuries and Giroud is slow. When we finally get some pace he is shunted to the wing where his ability to drag defenders from the middle is lessened and his defensive work is non-existent. It might work for Germany who actually have 3 players off the highest quality who can interchange up-front as well as having the best keeper, best fullback and some solid DM's but it doesn't for us. Neither Ramsey or Wilshere are good enough here. Ramsey can't pass well enough and I still think Jack doesn't do enough productively to warrant a position here.
Wingers- The only place where we're decently stocked. Now if we can keep Walcott fit it would be great too.
Forwards- Giroud (not good enough as a starter but a decent player) has been supplemented by an inferior player
Alexis aside we've not improved our first eleven in any way. We've supplemented a team that has quite a few projects with a few more.
Blunders at DM and the forward position are clear enough.
For me Wenger's trying to shoehorn the players into his system as well while lacking quality in areas also. Mourinho has rectified both the last summer and winter.
Wenger's persisting with a number of players who are high profile but also who might not be compatible together
Ozil, Ramsey and Jack- Can they all play together consistently? I doubt it
Mourinho had Mata who was a key player the first season and then scored 20 and set up 20 plus the second season. He wouldn't fit in the system so Mourinho got rid. Wenger needs to do the same.
