Well, yeah, he's not better than Henry, Pires, Ljungberg or Bergkamp. By that standard everyone is pretty basic - including Aubameyang. Wiltord would still start for near every other team at that time aside for us and United in 2001 and would probably have a team built around him which wasn't the case at Arsenal. I suspect you share that view so I guess I just disagree with your generous application of the 'super basic' tag.

This is going too far the other way. In no way was he the hottest player property in Europe in 2000.

He was absolutely one of the very hottest players in Europe after that tournament. Never quite as talented as the starters we had, but he's the sort of signing that we have only attemtped once or twice since then. After 04 we mostly saw United and Chelsea pull luxury signings like that. I remember we tried for Malouda in -08 and he wouldn't even give us a second look.

He was a talent no doubt but if you go back to the summer of 2000 and ask who are the up and coming world class players I think most people would name the likes of Crespo, Totti, Veron and Rui Costa before Wiltord. I also reckon from that 2000 France squad Trezeguet was the more in demand player.

If signing Wiltord was like signing Mbappe today then he underperformed for us no matter how well he did.

I would say Cesc had more of a season 8 Jaime type of arc. Fought the good fight at Arsenal before being guilted back to Barcelona, where he soon died in the rubble at the Camp Nou.

Thanks for the share. Kid's Harry Clarke. He's a 19 year old centre back. Could get on the bench with the dodgy defensive situation we have. He's amongst half a dozen U-23s like Matty Smith who've been training with the team since we got back.

AMN looks like a proper athlete. I'd really like more insight into why it's not all coming together for him
