If someone has told your over the phone that 50m won't be enough then I think it's pretty fruitless to put in an official bid. Especially if they've made that stance public too.

Yeah, we have to raise our bid, even if it means we end up overpaying. We run the risk of playing a whole season with Giroud as our main striker again. There aren't many options and we also don't have time now.

Wenger didn't want him enough, I'm sure he would snap him up if he was for free though!

Would you pay any fee, regardless of how ridiculous it is, for the player you want provided we have enough money?

How about 70m on Torres? Would you pay that for a player you want? Or would you reconsider and not capture the target?

Difference with Torres is that 50m was insane for any striker at the time, never mind that had been poor for about a year. I'd argue it would be the equivalent of us bidding 60 or 70m for Suarez today.

They have made enough noises about 50 million. So lets call them out. If they don't sell we would have done our reputation no harm. But you can bet Suarez will bite the shit out of LFC if a 50 million bid from us gets rejected. And even if LFC sell him to a team abroad in jan or next year for 30 mill they are going to look stupid. There is no way they are getting CL footy with Suarez kicking up a fuss. Their best interest is in getting 50 mill from us and investing it on replacements.

Btw, David Ornstein confirms that we didn't even bid for Higuain, which agrees with that Fiorentino Perez was saying at that time. But then we agreed personal deal. How do one agrees personally when the club didn't make a bid to have a permission to discuss personal terms? We pulled out the moment we realised Suarez is available.
