I would have thought the £1 was a strategy to test the mooted release clause.
If it had been anyone other than Wenger involved people would not have reacted in the same way.
Because it ties in with the cartoon version of stingy Wenger people didn't take it as serious, which it was.
Whatever else I believe about Wenger I believe he's serious about his business.

What buy out clause?
It has been show to be a complete fabrication, Wenger has wasted everyones time with his fucking around- Suarez remains a Liverpool player.

yeah, he was already at 40 million pounds. if he and Suarez had interpreted the contract to mean Suarez would be free at 40,000,001 why would he pay anything more than that? if you knew i a phone cost 200 bucks, why would you pay the shop 220 bucks?

Nobody pays more than the release clause Biggus, unless it's a case like Thiago to Bayern where it was cheaper for them to pay more for tax reasons.

Why would you pay more than the release clause?

In the context of the information available to Arsenal at the time (which presumably came from Suarez's agent) we made the right decision to only bid enough to trigger the alleged clause.

I'm willing to bet that Liverpool only bid what was necessary when activating Diego Costa's release clause.

EDIT: Yep, Costa has a €25m release clause, what did Liverpool bid? €25m...

We were quite clearly led into believing there was a buy-out clause.

We tried to trigger it. If not for Liverpool's brash behavior no one would have ever known about the £1, just like no one has ever known about the few pounds that must have been spent over years to activate these buy-out clauses.

We know you want Wenger out desperately but it's quite sad you rather criticize us than be repelled by Liverpool's behavior.

Well i thought it was embarrassing initially, but in hindsight good on those ex players and fans of Liverpool who have made a fool out of themselves in this whole saga while our own - ex players and fans continue the obsession with certain subjects.

Wenger/ Gazidis who so ever are not faultless but denouncing the £1 is ridiculous.

But can you not appreciate Rohit that if you or anyone really wanted a player, your interest would be primarily to acquire the player and that necessarily requires good faith not only with the player but with his club, and not to engage in a point scoring exercise?

We don't reveal what we buy or sell players for, so who exactly is scoring points?

We bid what was supposed to be the release clause, it wasn't, story over. But, that bid does actually carry some significant weight in future negotiations, so we'll see how that pans out.

I don't even want Suarez, but your position is ridiculous.
