here's the thing with the 1 pound extra; if indeed there was a 40m clause then it would have been a shrewd move and we'd be laughing, but alas there was no clause and therefore it becomes a derisory offer and leaves us with eggs on our faces. The problem isn't the 1 pound, the problem is making such a bid without (as it turns out) doing our homework.

They obviously did. Which is why we haven't bothered to push the deal any further since we realised that Suarez and his agent were misinformed.

The £1 was to force Liverpool's hand. The offer was £40m. Take a minute to comprehend that kind of money.

Do you think liverpool would have sold him to us if we paid £41m then? Obviously not. So really its made no difference.

The tragedy isn't failing to sign Suarez. It's wasting our entire summer and potentially not signing someone like Higuain because we got distracted.

Honestly there's not much anyone can say because it's third hand information we're dealing with. It could very well be an honest mistake from everyone involved and I only wish Liverpool kept things quiet on their end. They really can't help themselves.

We should have been chasing other transfers on the side and things wouldn't look half as bad.

It's not that hard to figure out is it? The info about the clause came from his agent, if you are already speaking to the agent or intermediary (which we obviously were) then you might as well ask to see the clause if not the whole contract or spell out precisely what the clause says. It's not like we bid 41M or 42M, we were quite specific 40m+1, to do that, you must be sure of your intel.

sometimes you can sit down in your house with the blinds closed, look at the time and know it must be daylight outside, it's not until you go outside before you know it's daylight outside. Like I said it's not like we bid 41,42 or even 40.5m, we were specific. Nothing hilarious about it, a 4year old kid can tell you the source of the info was from the Suarez camp.

In their haste to defend Wenger people have have focused on that and deliberately ignored the other half of my post ie that we didn't even bother bidding for Higuain.

I maintain again that Wenger had no intention of paying 40M for a player.
And I doubt if he has any intention of paying 20M for a player.

Who doubted our seriousness? We got distracted by Suarez.

I have no idea how these things work anymore than you do but I suspect tabling the what you would define a bid is a formality. However there must be other ways to express interest. And if we go by newspaper reports, Madrid accepted an initial offer before changing the price.

Do yourself a favour GM, no one loves a good counterpoint or playing devils advocate more than me, but defending Wenger and his transfer policies is impossible.

Half of me thinks we are genuinely in for Suarez and the other half thinks it was a ploy to unsettle the nearest rivals that we could target hoping for disruption without needing to commit to the transfer. Aside from Spurs, whom we can't sign anyone from directly, the next two teams who I think have a chance of the top 4 are Swansea and Liverpool. I still think we are ahead of them, but the fact that we are probably targeting Suarez, Michu and maybe Williams, when we have hardly ever gone for domestic based players, may indicate that the new funds are being used to flex our muscle by taking on these potential rivals directly. It may well be that Wenger has decided that they offer less risk, but I will remain skeptical that he has taken this view until he pays their asking price and actually completes one of those deals.
