two premises that are certainly true:
-arsenal have plenty of money
-there are plenty of available players out there who would improve both the squad and first team

if we don't sign anyone of any importance this summer, it is all on wenger. no one else.

Kel is basically right. The board have made it clear that there's money to spend. I'm mainly interested in seeing the fan reaction if we don't make any big moves by the deadline.

Noises from above every season have been we have money to spend, how much, we have never known. I can't imagine anyone saying money is tight anyways.

This season is different, we have just made a £40 Million bid, that is almost 2.5 times our record transfer fee.

I agree, it's imperative we make a couple of marquee signings. If nothing it will just brighten the mood come 17th of August, will make a huge difference as not only fans but even players are looking forward to it.

I speculated something similar a couple of weeks ago when we first bid for him and before the Amy Lawerence interview but I thought the split may have between Gazidis and Wenger.
Well whoever the split was between it doesn't take genius to work out that something had happened at board level when Arsenal decided to bid 40m for a player it s pretty apparent to those with common sense to work out.

Why can't it be this simple - we closed two big sponsorship deals and can afford these transfer prices now?

Anyways, i will only believe that it isn't quite the same as before with regards to Wenger and the management being on the same page if he isn't offered a new deal.

You actually believe that 'the board' are forcing Wenger to sign players?

That's ridiculous; you know it, I know it, everyone knows it.

If they were that desperate and they were going above his head, they would have lashed another bid in straight away and Suarez would be training at Arsenal right now.

i think gazidis' bullish comments earlier this summer was made to place all responsibility for this summer's activities on wenger.

I don't think the board are forcing Wenger to spend. To me, it seems like they've put our business out in the public to basically say, "if we don't spend, don't look at us. Wenger has the money available, so he's the one to blame for not taking action."

And Captain, I think we've all judged Arsene over the last few seasons. It's been the same old "we have quality/young talent in our side already" comments accompanied by bargain buys.

Biggus you're taking your lead from that Myles Palmer farce of an article?
We know something has happened - Gazidis said at the very beginning of the summer that Wenger would have new tools at his disposal, that we were entering a new phase.
You refused to believe that at the time, now that you've been proved wrong and we have bid big you're atrributing this to a split in the board and Wenger being forced to spend.
Wheras last week you were saying the Suarez bid was proof that Wenger was mad and desperate.
All of that is fair enough if that's how you view it but it's not in any way obvious or clear that what you believe is actually true.

And yet over the last two seasons he has never gone with those young talented players and splashed 100m on older, experienced pros. I guess everyone sees what they want to but his actions almost always undermine his words.

I'm not really sure what to think about that, to be honest. Sometimes I feel like he's stuck in his own reality. In other words, if he can't get someone for his valuation, it'll be extremely hard for him to budge at all. The Xabi Alonso situation sticks out as an example of this.

And you can talk about the "experienced" players that he's bought, but like I said, most of them have come from straight out of the bargain bin. And it's not like he hasn't utilized his young players heavily over the last several seasons.

For me that's exactly it.
That's his guiding principle and possibly at the heart of the stalemate in transfer activities this summer so far, as opposed to any major schism in the board room.
He sets a value for a player and that's seemingly it, no room for bargaining or manoeuvre.

It doesn't matter where they have come from, though I disagree with your assertion.

The point is that Wenger always says how good the squad is, how good his youngsters are, what they can achieve etc. and then usurps their starting positions with others because he knows what the limits of those players actually are. Jot down an Arsenal starting eleven and look at a) how long the players have been at the club and b) the average age.

Truth is that the squad overhaul started two summers ago and it is likely to continue.

Because we've always had money Rohit last season he spent over 40m on several players of course we can afford to pay that for 1.

No I didn't say I agreed with Myles I speculated that something had happened at board level firstly because of Gazidis' comments and secondly because we actually made a bid of over 40m for one player.
I don't know who is siding with who but I'm sure of one thing- It wasn't Wengers idea to bid 40m for Suarez, The pound yes but not the 40m.
