He was a pretty exemplary professional as a player, despite his off field issues, and it's not exactly unusual for someone to have a few concerns about the way the club's been run of late.
I think you are holding onto Capi's analogy a bit too hard.
Adams is only one of 3 (or is it 4 now with Bergkamp) men to be commemorated with a statue outside the stadium.
He is highly respected, loved and remembered fondly. No one is maligning him for his opinions and concerns about the club. He clearly knows where he stands with Arsenal fans.
It's also unbecoming of a player of his stature then to use the media (I think that is what he did) to sound off to the board on his rejection.
It wasn't a coach's/ manager's job that he was ignored for.
No one doubts his love for the club but right now he doesn't qualify for the position he was aspiring for.
