Wenger has earned a stay of execution on judgment day with his run in 2013. He's tired old fart, but he somehow managed to get this wretched group of players to (probably) the best record in the league in the 2nd half of the season. That counts for something.

We've always criticized him for being naive about defense. Our defense has improved in leaps and bounds. One hopes he builds on this in the summer and proves us all wrong about his ability to sign superstars.

Do we get the 25 odd million pounds CL money right now or do we need to win the qualifier for it? If it's the latter I can definitely see them dithering over big signings till the last 5 days of the window.

Wenger can get this team to fourth place by just flat out winning 8 out of 10 games while playing terrible football, but seemed to struggle with the big games this season. I put that down to lack of super-quality in attack.

Qualifier I think.

I think that the 25m is television money from actually being in the CL.

We have to win the qualifier.
We cannot afford to dither this season. UEFA manages qualification so that big teams like Arsenal and Milan do not meet. We should assume that we will get through the qualifier, a position that can only be solidified by buying super quality players.

is this right? do we just pretend the first half never happened? or 2006-12 for that matter? what if we had started strong and then faded?

Let him see out his contract, he's just put together a genuinely incredible run in the league, has money, and has a fantastic opportunity in the league with all of the managerial turmoil at other clubs.

Lets see what happens this summer, I'm quietly (surprisingly, and reluctantly) confident that it will be a good window 🙂

as i said, he needs to follow this up with signings. i'm a firm Wenger hater, but i'm not going to deny him the credit due him for his last 14 games with no loss. we went through the last 10 games with 8 wins and 2 draws and an amazing goals conceded record (5 or so). this is a team that all commentators have led us to believe has no backbone, and is unable to perform under pressure.

they had to overcome a 7 point deficit against a rival team that most commentators still consider better than our own. and other than a slip-up against Fulham, Spurs cannot be faulted for having a bad run in.

the short of it is Wenger has given us misery for 7 years, but the last 4 months are impressive and we should never lose sight of that.

The Gap between top 3 and the rest of the league is too much. Wenger is smart and realizes this. I think a lot of clubs/owners are just happy to stay in PL and take home the TV money.

I agree. To me, the good results of last 4 months shows up the shit results of the previous 4 months and beyond!
To give him credit for this, i must also get a free kick, right between his legs, squarely on on the bollocks.

consider the last 14 games on their own. do not compare against anything we have done. just look at that record vs United, Chelsea, Citeh. is it a good record or not? is that not worth celebrating? if so, do we congratulate only the players, or do we also include the coaching staff?

I agree with Claud. A lot of the question marks I had over Wenger, mainly his ability to get the best out of these group of players, have been answered with that run, or our final league position in general. If he spends this summer and gives us a squad to be taken semi seriously, I'd be interested to see how things shape up.

Worst case scenario, the status quo is maintained and he leave next summer.

True, especially when you factor in Kami's point about limited signings but we should make sure we get better than Gervs and Girouds so we are not reduced to spud level. Who else but the manager can you blame for that? Not saying he does get any credit for achieving 4th place but we were lucky the spuds do not possess a reliable striker and fell away after Liverpool beat them as i even thought they were favourites for 3rd spot at the expense of Chelski!

But thats always the way its been Claudius, we've always played well when it's too late and doesn't matter any more, all those desperate heroic and ultimately pointless comebacks in the CL.
When people were nervous that we'd miss out on the Prize I never doubted for a minute as I said in the thread: "If theres one thing Wenger knows about its getting 4th place."
The whole team is carefully constructed that way, 16 years of qualification for the CL and he has never once won it, the man is the very definition of mediocrity.
