True. When the Champions League money doesn't get spent on improving the squad, and participation in it doesn't appear to attract many players to us anyway it is hard to see what the actual point of it is. Aside from lining Kroenke's pockets and providing Gazidis and Wenger with nice bonuses for achieving it, would there be any noticeable difference now if we had finished 5th last season? Would anyone who is still here have left because of it?

I used to think like that, but it's definitely better that we make it than not. Could easily see a few of current bunch (justified or not) agitating to get out if we were floating around in the Europa League or worse.

As for the league, I think we'll be okay. The squad is settled and seems to have developed a bit of rhythm and understanding, which will hopefully result in some consistency. Still, we are an injury or two away from problems and without any major signings unlikely to give the title chase a real nudge, unfortunately.

Blokes like Illaramendi moving for 38m euro, Chelsea wanting £50m for Luiz etc.

You would have to be mental to think guys like Wilshere and Koscielny wouldn't go for massive money.

It's as I've always said, Wenger by virtue of his unique position in the football world defines his own success, and his version of success is that the raison d'etre of a professional football team is to make a profit for the club not to win trophies.
And over the years this perversion has hardened into a reflex.

We may come out of the blocks Ok but we won't win enough games over the season with 20 players who which still lack distinct quality that stands out, yes they will be better than before but they will also burn out and rotate with whatever floor scraping the management get on last week bargain bin basement dash.

We will race for 4th again just this time with even more money that could have been spent on players just sitting around, looks like a real true asset stripping job here for kroenke.

Nobody is seriously coming in for those guys.
Generally, our talent would not improve the biggest clubs. Think about our best player - Cazorla. How would he improve these teams?
United (Nani, Young, Kagawa, Rooney, Valencia)
Citeh (Nasri, Silva, Navas, Toure, etc)
Chelsea (Schurle, Oscar, Hazard, Mata)

Of course they would. Pretty confident Man Utd would rather have Walcott getting around for them ahead of Welbeck, Nani, Young and Valencia, as an example.

Unless Moyes changes their play-maker roles, Walcott cannot be a manu winger.

Not really what we're talking about, though. Some of the boys reckon that none of our players would be worth a lot on the market, Claudius even dredged up a list. I just named a few from Man U that I think Walcott is more useful than, as an example.

I, however, took issue with your choice of Walcott who i do not think can reliably supply crosses like Nani, Young and Valencia do.

We have some pretty good players, under a better manager they'd be more effective and successful.
Although the new manager would obviously want to put his stamp on the team there are several players who should survive the regime change.

He out assisted all those guys last season. And he outscored them. Walcott would get games at any of the top 4 too.

We have plenty of players who would get games at the clubs above us. The problem is we don't have any real star players that blow everyone else out of the water. The last few years we had RVP, Fabregas, etc who were that good. Before that we had 5/6 players like that in the squad, thats why we were champions then.

I like most of the main players we have now but they need something to lift them up to the next level.
