If we get a world class striker in the summer there's every likelihood we'll be competing strongly for the title this time next year imo.

We're top after 21 games. I want Wenger to give the team some extra fuel to make sure we're still top after the remaining 17.

qs! said 'compete' and you said 'up there', I was just responding to that. We'll still have a very good chance of winning the league without signings IMO, and if we manage to do it it would be an absolutely massive achievement given how much City/Chelsea have invested in their respective squads during the last 3/4 years. We're only at the beginning of a cycle with this team IMO.

I don't get why this is rocket science.

Wenger should do everything in his power to sign a top drawer striker right now, even if costs £50m. It's hardly going to cost much less in the summer, we'd just have a far broader selection but is that what's most important, or winning a goddamn title?

Yes, we might compete again next season, we'll still have a strong squad. Or, any number of things might happen. Players may leave and not be replaced, or may pick up season-long injuries. I can't see how we could realistically hope to be better placed next year, but hey.

We're not in a position where title wins are inevitable if we keep building. Our opponents are too rich for that. Carpe fucking diem.

Financial fair play rules are coming into effect, we have have a shit load of cash in the bank and we have a much higher turnover than Chelsea or City. Additionally, if Wenger could spend £50m to get a striker as good as or better than Diego Costa then I'm sure he would. As it is, that's not possible so there's no real point since I really believe very strongly that we'll get a striker as good as or better than Diego Costa in the summer. We have everything in place to have a competitive team for years to come. The worst thing that we could possibly do is make an impetuous short term move that fucks us over in the long term a la Arshavin.

@DKF I've got more faith in FFP than most people, but I don't think it by itself will be enough to make us consistently competitive the way you do.

I think it'll put us in a position where we have opportunities to seize, which is better than we've had for going on a decade now of finishing well off the pace.

No, I think we fundamentally agree on your general point there. I just see our opportunity to be seized as a 3-4 year window while you seem to see it as a 1 year window. Eventually Man U will stop being dumb and build a team that will crush everybody but we're in a better position than City and Chelsea moving forward.

FFP isn't going to cause this juggernaut City side to shed players immediately, I don't think. I guess we'll see in summer.

At the moment their ridiculous form is creating a perception we've been a bit fortunate with their slow start this season.

Its not that i dont want Wenger to seize the moment and buy players, but i can honeslty see why he doesnt want to buy average players and why he cant get good ones this window.

I would have had a bit of sympathy for him if it wasn't for the fact that we've screwed up so badly in the last three transfer windows when there were good strikers available. You paint yourself into a corner and this is what you get. Just swallow the bitter pill, sign a temporary player and move on.

Exactly. It isn't like us needing a top striker is something we just found out, and it isn't like we didn't know we would have serious money coming in just now either.

If we can't get top quality, I reckon Michu would be the best stop gap we can get.

Good age, quality, knows the league, versatile (so hopefully won't become deadwood at some point).
