Hodgson's case seems to be inadvertent.
Thing is, if you actually do upset the people you're around with your choice of phrase, it affects them regardless of whether you're the loveliest bloke on the planet.
Ultimately you're the one who starts to look like a jerk - especially if you get your back up and start standing on your rights instead of just modifying your behaviour.

If you can't imagine how the thoughtless use of a phrase that alludes to black slaves being thieves could possibly upset someone ... or calling a police van a "paddy wagon" etc etc.
You don't have to take it as a personal indictment: you just realise you made a mistake, apologise if necessary, change your behaviour and move on.
