I agree with that. Marcelo, also, has been poor defensively. Regularly being beaten by his man even moreso than Alves who most consider a lightweight defender. As Dula says, Spain will spank them if they play the same team, which would do them the world of good as it would force Scolari to make the changes required. He seems to have too much loyalty for underwhelming players like Hulk and Alex, when he has, seemingly, better options on the bench but, surprisingly, wasn't scared to drop an under-performing Ronaldinho.

Marcelo played very sparingly for Madrid. On form he is the best fullback in world football for me. I also disagree with Ricky regarding Thiago Silva. He had a poor game for sure, but he is mostly a rock. Buffon had a shocker against Brazil, but I think it would be unfair to write him off based on one game, same as with Silva.

I'd love for us to sign Luiz Gustavo, which I may have mentioned once or twice for a year or so. 🙂
Next season being a WC year - how would you guys rate our chances of prying him away from Bayern? Surely, considering he was only back up last season, he is wary of spending another year on Bayern's bench?

I agree with you that Luiz Gustavo would be fantastic for us, based solely on his Champion's League displays, but i don't think we have much of a chance as he is far too important for Bayern. His natural defensive game also complements Schweinsteiger's play-making game.

Is he a pure defensive midfielder? I dont think there would be a place for one in Pep's setup and for that matter at Arsenal as well.

The "out and out" pure defensive midfielder no longer exists at the top level in modern football anymore.
He does challenge, intercept and tackle rather well, as his performance against Real Madrid shows.

This is exactly the kind of game where the Spaniards are at their boring worst. Slow sideways passing, very rarely threatens. If they should happen to score - it will only get worse. Then it will be mostly possession football without really looking to score.
