I like McCarthy for Ireland but he's not what we need at all. He's basically a poorer version of what Ramsey gives us now. And he's not even any better than Ramsey defensively or Arteta for that matter. If you put him in our midfield replacing either of them the defence would be under a lot of pressure through the middle again.

The only Irish player I would contemplate signing at the moment is Coleman.

Coleman is a solid enough full back, I think he still has another level to go up defensively but he'd be good for us going forward because he'd offer us the width on the right that Gibbs sometimes gives us on the left.

Should have signed Long instead of Giroud. For a player around that price he'd have scored more I think.

Actually if we were looking for a utility defender Marc Wilson would be pretty good cover all across the back line. Great in the air too.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is set to make a £6 million bid for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy in the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old has been in tremendous form all season and has been linked with the Gunners, Chelsea and Newcastle.
SportsDirect News unerstands the youngster has made up his mind that he must get away from Wigan should they - as looks increasingly likely - collapse into the Championship.
Even were he to become an FA Cup winner against Manchester City this weekend it would make no difference and Wenger is at the head of the queue for his services.
Wenger admires his bravery, skill and vision and is determined to steal a march on his rivals.
The Londoners are not in the same market place as Chelsea given they are still repaying the loans and interest for the new stadium.
But Wenger will be given a sensible war chest of transfer kitty funds and sees McCarthy as tremendous value within his budget.

One of those players we shouldn't sign. Not good enough right now, and I don't see the potential in him to become one of the best in the league. If we sign a midfielder it should be someone significantly better IMO.

The only thing he would add is decent depth in the midfield. He could fill in for Ramsey or Arteta without it being a disaster but like I said he's a step down from both.

I really would rather someone more physical too.

He's impressed me every time I've seen him. Chooses the right option and is very mobile. I'd be really surprised if Wenger doesn't bid for him if Wigan get relegated.

Good player, but too similar to Ramsey. Based on Rambo's recent improvement not as good either.

We need a Gonalons/Capoue as a pure DM much more. Arteta provides the experience and know how, Rambo and Jack provide the pressing/all action style (just minus the goal, which will come).

McCarthy would be a nice addition for depth, but is not really needed.
