I left Arsenal because we could not agree on a financial level.
They decided to not make the effort to keep me, it is a choice I respect, and they respected the fact I didn't want the wages they proposed.
Did Arsene Wenger make a mistake in not keeping me? He made a choice, but indeed I believe he made a mistake.

I didn't like Gallas and was happy to see him go.
He seemed to be a malign presence in the dressing room.

For a time I thought that his departure translated into a better spirit on the pitch but given the number of players who are unwilling to commit to being here I do wonder if our problems were more deeply rooted than Gallas.

In general there seems to be a lack of unity and camaraderie between the players.

We just have a very real problem in the sense that we can't compete with the other big clubs in terms of wages. The gap will be smaller once the Fair play initiative has had a chance to kick in but you'd expect a few more players to leave over financial disagreements until then. Gallas didn't have a better season than either Djourou or Koscielny so I can't say I'm too bothered in retrospect to have lost him. It didn't make sense to pay him £80K per month for two more years. The bigger question is how we're going to keep some of the star players when the wage bills for the rest of the top four (plus Liverpool) just keep growing. We're experiencing it right now with Nasri but he's not the only one. We're paying someone like Fabregas less than half of what Rooney earns despite being twice the player. If he'd been at any other club he'd be long gone by now.

It's becoming a big problem. Hopefully, in the short term, we ease the problem by trimming the squad of the players that are on good contracts more on the basis of their potential than their actual level of performance.

But are wage bill in total is right up there with the rest. We are paying youngish players far more than they deserved. Once we pay them top bucks, its only natural they will want another level up once they get a new contract like Nasri.

It's not. Chelsea's wage bill is £172.5 million. Manchester City's is £133.3 million, closely followed by United at £131.7 million. Arsenal's wage bill is £110 million.

Chelsea's wage bill is obscene but it still has nothing on the types of wages we have seen in recent years at Inter, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
